Hi everyone

I am new and have only had our guinea pigs for 3 weeks now. I am new to keeping pets so am extra cautious and want to do the best for them. Last week one of them had a gunky eye so we took it to the vets (3 days after they passed their health check). They gave me some eye drops and we put them in for 5 days. It seemed to do the job but his eye still needs wiping occasionally. The other pig has been fine but yesterday his eye was stuck shut. We wiped it and it was then ok but was the same today. There doesn't seem to be any other issues and they are eating fine. Do you think I should use the eye drops again on the other one or see how it goes? I am concerned that we are doing something wrong which is causing the eye problems. We check them each day and spot clean every day and fully clean their hutch every 3-4 days. Any advice gratefully received.

Cooled boiled water with some salt may help, bathe very gently.
I really think it may be worth trying the drops - could you give your vet a call to ask for advice ?
If you watch piggies when they groom themselves, they produce a milky substance from their eyes to keep them clean (I freaked the first time I saw this :mal:)
Possibly a change of atmosphere and bedding has contributed - were they indoor piggies before you had them ?

We have been wiping their eyes with boiled water as you would with human eyes. Think we will try the drops again but wasn't sure for how long and if it was safe to continually use them. Might give the vet a call after bank holiday. They were only 11 weeks old when we got them and were indoors and now they are outdoors so maybe this didn't help. They seem to be eating ok. Not quite sure about behaviour because we haven't had them long and they are our first so not sure what is normal yet although one of them has been sneezing.

Hello and welcome.
As we have members from all over the world, we find it very helpful if you please added your country and county, so we can adapt any advice accordingly. Please click on your username on the top bar, then go to personal details and scroll down to location. In the same section you can also upload your avatar, that is the picture that appears with every post you make.
I never mess around with my piggies eyes. Things can sometimes deteriorate very quickly. I think a cavy savvy vet should see the eyes - were they checked for a hay poke (did vet check corneas for scratches by using fluorescent drops)? What were the drops you were given?

Are you able to upload photos so that some of our specialist health and illness members can comment?

Hi VickiA
I have added my location and will update my avatar soon. The vet just took a look at his eyes. To be honest he saw them on the Monday (for a health check) and then we were back with them on the Saturday. His eye didn't look too bad when I took him, just a bit gunky in the corner. He never had a problem with it being closed up and stuck together or the actual eye being discoloured. The other guinea pig has had his eye closed up for the last 2 days when we have checked but ok once we have wiped it. We checked them this morning and both of them had one eye which was a bit gunky. We wiped with water and cotton wool and it was like wiping sleep away from their eyes. They looked fine after that. Have been checking throughout the day but just going to get them out of their run soon and will give a closer check. I will see if I can get any photos. The drops are called Isathal. Thanks for your help.
