….. so I put a romance leaf in each and for the first time no one shot out like a furry spud gun squeaking at me in complet lettuce terror! Just a little oiyoiyoi followed by loud and satisfied crunching. Wee Poppy is sticking to her dark corner, but Pansy seems to be a bit braver.

Ach look at her she’s lovely! Wee PansyFace! 🥰

Welcome to (arguably) the biggest perk of guinea pig ownership - getting more excited about them eating their food than they do.
Ano - I am loving the crunching noises and the hay munching! I’ve also had a thought … ok what do you think….

Carefresh on the base with fleece on top. Poop could be shaken off and Carefresh spot cleaned….. have I invented something, or is this already a thing….?

Puppy training pads would be cheaper honestly, the price of Carefresh has skyrocketed even in the last decade. And you'd still want to put something under the Carefresh because it doesn't hold the urine quite like pee pads do and it'll bleed through to the cage floor more easily.

I miss Carefresh, it's great stuff if not for the price. But I'd stick to puppy pads honestly.

Puppy pads here, bought some large ones and got 50 of them, they have a tape on the back which I’ve never had before, only costing £8 something, I use mattress protector underneath them, works wonders, plus loads of hay

Aye it’s expensive. I once kept a hamster on stuff called megazorb. It’s dust free and used for horses. Came in. HUGE sack! I have them on bed training pads at the min and they seem to be working well.

I was wondering what romance leaves were 🤣 it’s very heart warming when they enjoy their grub. And yea to hearing them munch. A calming, relaxing sound.

So 14L of Carefresh is 10.74 😳😳. But 87 L of Megazorb is about £16

I'm a Megazorb fan as well, some people find the smell offputting but it's not bad stuff. Back2Nature's not bad either though it holds far more than its weight in liquid and that can get heavy fast. Currently I've Nature's Own wood shavings in the non-fleece area atm, I have no idea why I prefer those specifically, I just do. I'd still toss it all in a heartbeat for Carefresh again lol.

Mind you I say all this, I don't have to pay stupid amounts to get deliveries to NI any more. That's only gonna have gotten worse since Brexit, not that it was great before.

PS I’ve encountered megazorb before but only briefly as it was used for the (no longer) school guinea pigs. I can’t say if it was any good because i reacted to it. So the next time, I put them on shavings instead.

Aubiose is another good one. Now that I really liked.

Lol! Oh don’t start me 🙄. I’m thinking New Zealand sounds tempting. I’m fed up with this place! 😡

I use megazorb. I really like the fact you can remove the wet areas very easily as it sticks together more than shavings do. Although with three separate enclosures, one bag doesn’t last me very long!

Aye - I can see that more enclosures would be expensive. I only have one - when my new corex base arrives I might give it a go.

…. ( by base I mean new c&c 2x4 with Perspex). Isolating with covid may prove to be expensive!

Yeah, you'll want even a basic kind of wall to the cage for Megazorb. Of all the paper beddings I've used it's the one that's guaranteed to escape anywhere and everywhere.

My cello teacher kept guineapigs for years and I asked him what is THE BEST way he found that nailed it for him - he said Carefresh. That was before the price hike tho 🙄.

I mean, he's not wrong 🤷‍♂️ the price didn't help but what really put me off long term was being unable to get it delivered. Amazon would only sell the American version (plus import fees) and if you thought the price of Carefresh was bad, those were horrendous. Pity, too, I could get a 30l bag of it to cover a 4x4 space with a decent layer, and unlike Back2Nature it didn't weigh a ton trying to get it into a rubbish bag. It has to go into my general waste bin, which gets emptied every 3 weeks, so the less weight in it the better.

There's always a few months of teething problems when you bring them home for the first time in a while. Did you get enough water bottles, hideys, bowls. Did you get the right nuggets (and will they eat said nuggets). What bedding works best, what mix, all fleece, all paper. Did you get the right hay (and again, will they eat it). What fresh veggies do they eat (and will they eat them because good grief for such wee animals they're right fussy gits).

Yes - I’m stressing a bit and I need to lighten up or they will take over! 🤣🙄

It happens to all of us, don't let anyone tell you otherwise :)) it'll settle eventually.
Right - imma try Carefresh - Jolleys in Bangor have it for £22 for 60l. Didn’t you say you got 30l to cover 4x4? And I have 2x4 and this is 60l… sure by the time you’d go to IKEA and buy flippin noodle bathmats! 🤣🤣.

I use puppy pads - used to get 40 charcoal ones on Amazon for £16, but then discovered packs of 100 in Pets at Home for £14!

IKEA Belfast isn't the easiest to get to though lol, and IKEA's dangerous anyway. You walk in there for bathmats, you leave with enough to kit out an entire house. And Carefresh is well packed, it expands out more than you'd expect. But now I know there's a 60l pack I realise I might actually be talking about a 60l pack, not a 30l.

And in going to look this up on Amazon I've discovered I have 60l of Back2Nature coming my way even though I'm adamant I cancelled it this month. Sigh.
