I just joined but never did a proper memorial of my first Guinea Pig: Socrates.

I still blame myself for Socrates death and not being educated enough. I went by the first Exotic Vet's recommendation instead of getting a second opinion. I blindly accepted the recommendation of Socrates needing surgery and didn't know the risk involve.

By far, she was the smartest guinea pig out of all the ones we have. She was a squeaker and still miss her. She always squeaked when she wanted her dinner and everything she heard a plastic bag.

Socrates was a gorgeous girl!

Sadly, we can always only act on the best knowledge we have and give our pets love and the best care we can give at the time.

Pet keeping is a lifelong learning curve and we all have to start somewhere. You have NOT failed her by being a negligent owner; you took her to what was supposed to be a competent vet! In hindsight everybody can do better... and we all end up wishing we'd known what we know now back then at some point or other.

PS: I have lost piggies in and after operations, so I know how you feel. Use the knowledge and insights that she has taught you for the improved care of your current and future piggies; that is all that is needed.

Very sorry for the loss of your beautiful girl. I just want to echo what Wiebke has said above, please do not blame yourself you did everything right and listened to the advice of a specialist, you have in no way let your girl down or have any blame laid on your shoulders. Huge hugs

RIP Socrates
