high please can some1 tell me the pros and cons of having a piggy neutered?

i have been thinking bout it for a while now but am not sure whether to go ahead.

just wondered if any1 could tell me the good and bad things about it please?
::) ::)

4 weeks ago i had my Murphy neutered he came from RSPCA alone and they suggested neutering him so i took him for his op and couldnt believe how quick he got over the op he came home at 2 and by 5.30 he was muching away and hopping around.

His new wife Romey is moving in tomorrow with him. So its all good from us. :smitten:

I have had 1 boar neutered I would do it again with another but not if they are too old, Digby didnt cope very well under anaesthetic so I think it is better if they are younger. Um if you arent planning on putting him with ladies then there is no point as it doesnt change their personality and if he is only ever going to be bonded with one you may be better just getting another boar :) Make sure you ring a few vets before taking the plunge to make sure they know what they are doing too ;)

The only pro to having a boar neutered is if you are going to pair him up with a sow. As Dazie mentioned it will make no difference to his personality.
I think you have two boars don't you? In which case their is no point putting them through it.

It is nice for them to live with girls and dont regret my decision with Sammy in February

its just mine have a lot of tiffs about dominancy,

will this change them or will they be the same?

Obviously the cons are the risks involved in the op - not only the anaesthetic but there can be quite awful consequences. I wouldn't do it unless I was pairing with a sow, but would probably just pair with another boar anyway. I think boars are fabbo!

They will be exactly the same - so you could be putting him through a bad experience needlessly. It wont change his personality at all, if he's dominant then he'll stay dominant and if he's submissive then he'll stay submissive. Have you thought of a larger cage or running area?

:) Pros are a lifetimes happiness with one or more sows.

Cons: There is a small risk that after surgery complications can happen, which is why you need to choose a vet that does lots of castrates. There are so many variables to doing the op that the best way of deciding on your vet is to pick one that has been successful.

I've had nearly 60 castrates done and no complications. The other thing that can happen is the op can 'bring out' underlying illnesses (usually URTIs) and you could lose guinea. But they would have to have these probs in the first place and its likely that these would be the cause of death anyway.

In your case a castrate is not necessary unlkess you are thinking of getting both done to live with sows. The option is for them to live side by side in a seperated pen.

As Black Jack has just said it will not change their dominance at all.
I also agree that more room can normally sort out most (small) tiffs between boars. Make sure you give them two of everything and that they have enough space to be able to get away from each other.

I would only do it if I had one boar and loads of sows, other than that I wouldn't want to risk it, but it's a personal choice I guess. :)

i would only do it if a had a lonely boar who wouldnt get on with other boars and would castrate so the boar could live with a sow :)

I have had it done for a lonely boar to live with all my girls. The op was simple and went well. If you have two males who aren't getting on will make no difference if you have them neutered or not.
