Pro's and con's?

Okay I was just having a long soak in the tub after work and had an idea!
My brother has a lovely piggie called Fred, who lives in his bedroom.
I don't know if it's my brothers age or what but sometimes he spends different amounts of time looking after him, best way to put it.
It's gone to me to look after him a bit more now, he gets veggies when my girls do and often goes for cuddles in my brothers bed with him. He is no way neglected by the way :)
Okay cut long story short.... I had the idea of getting Fred's crown jewels removed so he could live with my 4 ladies, and not be alone.
But...what if he doesn't like the ladies?
What if something terrible goes wrong during surgery and my brother would hate me for life!
I've never had this problem before as I've always had ladies or 2 brothers together.
Hmmm it's got me thinking though. He's a fairly young healthy pig and if all went well he'd have lots of love and snuggles off 4 wives! :(|)
 
I'm sure he would be fine with the op, but never had to do it as Harley was done when we got him.
I would hate the feeling of putting one of mine through it, but if its for the best and he will get some girlfriends, think i would do it. x

i had the same problem.
i bought 2 females, one turned out to be male.
they had 2 litters together but they were seperate most of the time. and i felt sorry for him being on his own. so i couple of months ago i got him neutered, it all went well till last week when he developed an abscess. the vet drained it and and put him on anti biotics but it has just come back again and he is back at the vets tomorrow. i wish i could take it back and not had him neutered because he doesn't deserve this. and i feel so bad for him.
i don't think it is common but i just wanted to share my experience of piggy neutering
 
No one really can, there is always a risk with neutering however I have had one boar neutered but then he wasn't accepted by his wife so I had to get him his own friend.

It'd be great for him to have 4 wives provided he was accepted and there was no problems with surgery.

My two boars were happily accepted by there wives. You just can't predict what will happen!

Worse case scenerio he may only be accepted by 1 sow that would mean splitting the group. If you put him under the knife he has to get a wife, well thats my view it seems unfair otherwise!
 
I don't want to put him through any unnecessary pain :( I just don't like the fact he lives alone. I wouldn't ideally want to split the sows up either. I'm so worried something could wrong! Little worry pot anyway! There are good and bad points to it. Hard decision arghhhh :(
 
Yep. He's 12. Just explained if I did go ahead with it sometimes bad things do happen. He agrees but has typical teenage boy syndrome and just grunts really :D
 
In my experience a boar with a group of sows tends to be quite a stable relationship. My neutered boar George really lived for his ladies. I adopted him from a rescue when he was 7 months and he lived with a herd of six sows. He loved them very much, they meant everything to him and when he had an abscess last year he didn't eat when he was in the hospital cage and be became depressed. On his last night (before he was put to sleep) I put him back with his girlies one last time and he wheeked to greet them even though he was really at death's door. I think this shows how important they were to him and how valuable he found his interactions with them.

I would always try to neuter a single male to put with a group of females for quality of life reasons. Even if it doesn't work out then you know that you have done the best for your piggy.

Oh thats so sad. Poor George :( His 6 wives though awww!
Fred is such a lively little character. He wheeks to the girls in my room across the landing. It makes me sad! He's so friendly and so so vocal! I just don't want him to be in pain gaaaaaah :( But I imagine him with his 4 wives. Hmm its definitely a hard one! Then I'll have to buy him a new cosy too! ;)
 
I think I'm swaying away from the idea after some thinking. I don't want to put him through such a high risk op :( He's such a happy little chappy and I love him loads. It's a tough one as on the other hand I don't like him living on his own, he's so content and happy but nothing substitues for your own kind :( Giving it lotsssssssssssss of thought!
 
What about a male friend?

Perhaps contact Rugby Guinea Pig and Rabbit welfare as they spay sows, I know its a bit out the way but no op and your little man gets his own friend. :)

A baby male friend? It's an idea. I just don't want anything to go wrong with that either as we don't have tonnes of room if they didn't get on. I'm thinking about it and not rushing into anything. I just can't bring myself to put him through any pain! arghh.... and where is Rugby? And isn't spaying a sow worse than neutering a boy? I'm all confused sorry hehe :(|)

Spaying is ment to be a risky op, but with a fantastic vet it's very successful. My boys aren't neutered but my girls are spayed ;).

They came from Rugby Guinea Pig and Rabbit Welfare. When I rehomed from her I was living in Belfast and my Girls were piggy trained to Glasgow were I collected from.

Rugby is a fantastic rescue, they neuter all animals Rabbits and Guinea's it's £30 well t was last year but that may have changed for an animal minimum donation but I bet it costs them alot more than that. They are brilliant and Tracy is lovely.
 
Something else to think about. Thankyou :(|) Not jumping into anything without out thinking about it first. He's out sunning himself at the moment hehe x
