Hi I've had my pair of baby boars for 3 weeks now. I've not handled them much this week as I've moved them into a new cage last weekend and and they're still very jumpy so wanted to give them chance to settle in. I've just got them out for some run time in the kitchen and whilst eating some veg on my lap I've noticed that Otis's willy is prodruding and clearly visible - definitely wasn't like this before. It looks clean and can see 2 little hooks on the end but i'm worried why he isn't retracting it. He's still eating and drinking fine and doesnt seem to be upset by it. Has anyone else had a piggie with this problem or know what may be going on or what I can do? ?/

Thanks

I've been scouring the internet for advice on what to do. It seems this, ahem, situation can happen for a number of reasons, most commonly due to irritation from bedding / a piece of straw stuck in there or from fluid from sexual activity 'setting' like super glue. Nice. Knew I should've gone for girls!

I'm supposed to be going away tomorrow to Paris until friday so Otis's timing is fantastic. I've just raced to the petshop and bought some small animal shampoo and some vetbed - am going to attempt to wash the area and use vaseline on it to see if this helps. I've emptied all the wood shavings from the cage and lined it with newspaper and vetbed - with hay at one end - incase it's due to irritaion from the bedding. My boyfriend will be looking after them whilst I'm away so I'll get him to keep an eye on them an take him to the vets if it persists in 'hanging out'. :{

If anyone has any suggestions or advice I'd be grateful - was not expecting to see anything like this just yet!

You sure they haven't had guinea pig cable installed in their hutch without your knowledge? Perhaps he has been on the piggy porn a little too much! ;)

Haha! But he's such a cutie pie and only a baby still! He doesn't appear to be 'excited', just cant tuck it away. I've had a go at cleaning the area now and given him some comfy vetbed to lie on so will see if that helps at all, fingers crossed it will disappear after a good nights sleep! :{

I have seen similar thread on this before - you need to speak to suzygpr / amanda or such like - post a picture if you can - so they can see when they come on - as without a picture they wont know if it is the horns of the penis that are protruding ( which may mean a vet visit ) or sperm rods - suggest you keep on here tonight until one of them or abbynurse etc comes on with advice.

Is it still protruding? And what colour is it?

Is there a chance you could send us a picture of it? if its prolapsed and you cant ease it back in then he will need to see a vet as the mucous membranes will dry out and cause damage to the penis. If he has debris around it this will also carefully need clearing. If he has a sperm rod then I'm not 100% sure on the treatment, could you post a picture? Sorry to be a pain.

x.

Thanks for your replies. I carefully cleaned the area yesterday - it looked clean though with no bedding stuck or anything. A pale pink colour with no swelling I just wiped it with damp cotton wool and small animal shampoo and then lined his cage with clean soft vetbed incase the wood shavings irritated it. It was still protruding but not as much - I can't take a photo sorry I'm away now for a few days. My boyfriend is keeping an eye on him and will take him to the vet wednesday on his day off if no better. I feel awful leaving. :( Otis was popcorning and running round - eating/drinking/pooing fine lastnight tho so hope he's not in pain.

Does anyone know a good GP vet in the Derbyshire area? We live in Buxton if anyone knows of a good local-ish vet that would be a big help? Thanks

Just a little update on the situation...

after gently washing the area and swapping the bedding for newspaper and vetbed Otis's bits went back to normal much to my relief.

As soon as I got back from Paris on Friday I cleaned them out and put in the usual newspaper sawdust / hay bedding in.

All was fine until yesterday. He just wasn't himself, he stayed hidden in a pile of hay and didn't come out squeeking even when i rustled a bag of his favourite leaves. :( I got him out for a cuddle and hand fed him some veg which he took - but he wasnt as perky as normal and his willy has reappeared.

So - we're off to the vets this afternoon. I'm working from home today and taking him to a Cavy Savvy vet about an hour away at Alfreton (Ellie). Wilbur is going to come along to keep Otis company and get checked out too. I've put the vetbed back in and removed sawdust again lastnight incase this is the cause... both boys loved this and were popcorning like crazy all over the vetbed!

Anyway, hopefully i'll know more this afternoon! Wish us luck! x

Just got back from the vets. Both boys are extremely relieved to be back in their cage!

The vet was brilliant, she loves guinea pigs and checked both of them over expertly. Otis had managed to tuck his willy away by the time we got there. (this may have something to do with all the scary dogs barking in the waiting room!) Vet tested his urine and examined him carefully... nothing sinister wrong. She recommended i stick with vetbed to avoid irritation if he is prone to 'dangling', use vaseline and check he's clean regularly. She said if it persists in a few months it might be best to castrate him. (Otis gulped). I'd rather not have to do this but obviously if it's causing him any long term problems this may be the best option so will see how things go.
