Guinea-Tia-Flossie

I thought i would do a post on this as i'm abit confused!

All this talk of people threatening to put their animals to sleep has put questions in my mind...i took 3 bunnies in because their owner was going to PTS, and Verity has just taken a guinea as again his owners threatened to PTS if no one wanted him.
It just seems like an easy way to get animal lovers like ourselves to take their unwanted pets, by basically saying "take my guinea pig or i'll destroy it"

My question is, can a vets actually put an animal to sleep for no good reason, other than it's not wanted anymore?  ? Is that legal?

They can and they do sadly....

If an owner insists on having it done they should do it as awful as it is.

Many rescues get calls from vets to collect animals 'from the back door' that have been taken to be destroyed.

It is a sad sick world really.

My understanding is 'yes' it is legal. I do know of situations where a vet has agreed to take an animal on to find it a new home because the owners were going to PTS.

Whether people are using PTS as an excuse in order to quickly rehome their animal - I have no idea. Seems pretty sick if they are however, none of us on here would ever call their bluff 'just to see' so I guess it is difficult to ever prove..... :'(

So very sad. If I was a vet Id take them all home :D :smitten:

That is so sad. Vets are supposed to help animals, not put them to sleep just because somebody doesn't want them.

What I wonder is if the people would really do it or they're just saying that to make you feel bad and take them? Either way it's horrific.

yes, this is really sad and true - i would never have an animal put to sleep just because i was fed up with it and could rehome it. that is just terribly sad :'(

my vets refused to PTS my dads dog as she had a year left still in here dad was worried she was near death and got Mick to take her to get her PTS he couldn't face doing it but mIck brought her home for another year as predicted, and when Charlie was PTS last july the vet again said he would not let mIck take him home as he was suffering which I thought was very good of him lying his job on the line like that, and My vets refuse to PTS a healthy animal, they have a list of people who are willing to take them on me included, so not all vets are in it for the money thank God, I know if my vets advise PTS time they know its for the animals welfare,

:( how horrible... i dont understand why people would want that for their pets.. i would only do it if the animal was suffering or would suffer more in the near future... otherwise i would take them to a rescue :-\

I had a guinea who had become ill, we had visited the vets several times.

Toot had had an eye injury which kept every time she bumped into something started to bleeding internally, which is what had started our visit, the other sows in the herd then began to get cross with her as she kept walking in them, she was in good body and coat condition, great teeth but she was ill, she ended up with I think its call wire neck, due to the discomfort in her eye.
I was in with the vet for three quarters of an hour trying to make the decision on what to do, I decided to have her PTS when she walked in to the wall in front of me on the floor of the vets,
The vet was fine about it as he said her eye was probable giving her discomfort,
I feel if an owner truly Loves the animal they will give the animal a chance with therapy or medicine before they give the pet the the final walk. But also vet treatment is very expensive, and often rescues will not take animals in. which often leaves the owner in a difficult situation.

either way its the worst choice you ever have to make , I still feel bad knowing i said go ahead for some of my darling pets over the years but they were with out a doubt a no choice decision any chance is given no matter what,

My vet told me that she gets parents in of young kids who have rabbits / guinea pigs etc who get sick and when the parent finds out how much it is going to cost to make the animal well (£100+) often ask her for the animal to be PTS as much cheaper :'(

Then they go home and tell the child that it died whilst at the vets :(

Isnt that just horrible?

And I know that its not just the money as my vet offers payment plans where necessary. Parents dont realise what a responsibility it is until its too late :(

What vets are you at, I could then get my two boars done, and my dog for that matter( the snip i mean) all at once could break the bank.
