For around 2 weeks my boys have been making a noise which sounds like a puff of air. They do it every now and then on a daily basis. My OH is worried that it might be sneezing by I'm not so convinced. Any advice is welcome
hi my piggies do this too, like every day
i dont know if its sneezing but i looked it up on the internet and someone said that its normal for them to do it a few times a day, so i didnt worry
they dont have runny noses or anything but they sort of wipe their nose after with their paw.
ive had my pigs for nearly a year and theyve always done it so i dont think its anything really bad
Mine do it too. It sounds like a cough or a sneeze doesnt it.
I read before that as long as they dont do it too regularly then it is fine. It may just be some of the dust from the hay getting up their nose or maybe they are eating too fast.
If they start to do it more often than usual to the extent that you think there might be something wrong then keep and eye on them and maybe get advice on this forum as to whether to take them to the vets or not.
Snorting and sneezing are two very different things.
Sneezing - much like our own, can be due to dust or irritation, weeping eyes (draining through the tear-duct), or URI (upper respiratory infection).
Snorting (a short 'huff' sound) is a social signal - meaning intense irritation, directed to a cagemate as part of the dominance display, it can be the precursor to a fight so not to be ignored. It can also mean irritation with their piggy slave (you) if they are surprised by your approach to the cage (sometimes seen in pigs with poor/no eyesight). I have one female who snorts if I am not quick enough with the veggies and she gets very impatient.
