I took my piggy to the vet on Friday as he had a slightly gunky eye and I had noticed that he was puffed up more than usual. They gave me eye drops (said they were a little red but nothing to worry about) - checked teeth etc. and sent me on my way. Well, he is still not right today...when I picked him up just now his underside is wet (not sure if that's just because he had had a wee?!)...he is still puffed up etc. I saw him eat his veg this morning so he seems to be eating. I have some critical care which I shall start him on now as his weight does seemed to have dropped. He does seem to smell a bit more than usual too. Any ideas please?
I have lost confidence in the vets and was seriously considering changing practices this week anyway...(always see a different vet and the piggy specialist is no longer there)....was hoping that I could phone first thing and ask to speak to a vet with more piggy experience (when they have a number on duty).....rather than take a risk with the out of hours - I really do not mind spending money on vets appointments etc. but the last couple of times I have spent a lot and they haven't identified or solved the problems etc.....Thanks for any advice.

What were the eye drops you were given?

It sounds like it could be an infection so will need antibiotics. It's definitely a good idea to get him to a new vet tomorrow.

Keep syringe feeding him and if he deteriorates then you'll need to go to an emergency vet today.

Thank's @Jaycey The eye drops were Isathal. I am really torn as to whether to go to the emergency vet today however, I am not confident that we'll be in any better place than if I go first thing tomorrow...and I am wary of their charges etc. and not convinced they will know what it is. I made the appointment on Friday afternoon (got an appointment within an hour of phoning- cost £50+) to avoid this exact situation so I am a bit frustrated. Obviously if he deteriorates I will take him in. I have just given him a large romaine lettuce leaf which he has eaten so that is a good sign.

I completely understand. With emergency vets you get whoever is on call and it's usually not a piggy vet. Plus it costs a lot more. You're keeping a close eye on him and he's eating okay so I think he should be okay until tomorrow.

What is the color of his fur where he is wet? If it stinks/dirty then it might be a bladder infection or sludge. I had the same with my piggie (stinks and wet and dirty underneath) and she had some sludge witch caused irritation (she needed a operation to remove it). My vet took urine sample and a x-ray. Definitely make sure that he does not lose anymore weight but its definitely a good sign that he still eats his veggies. If he does not get worse you can best go to a piggie specialist as soon as possible and not to a emergency vet (i have never had a good experience with them)

Thanks @Shauni ...I can't really tell the colour because his fur is brown/black in that area but I will definitely mention the possibility of a bladder infection when I go to the vet tomorrow :)

Yes then it is difficult to see! Does it look likes he has pain while peeing (squeking or that he moves while peeing). Meaby you can take some pee to the vet (let him pee right before you go), so the vet can check it under the microscope. Meaby also an x-ray, because thats the only way to see if he has a stone or sludge. Hope he gets well soon!

I haven't heard him squeak so I'm not sure about that...but I will keep an eye on him to see if he is finding it difficult...thanks. Why do these things always happen at the weekend?!
