Hi! A couple of weeks ago one of my lovely guinea girl's began a strange grunting sound. She was grunting in and out with her breathing. After three days i decided to take her to the vet's even though her behaviour seemed pretty normal. I did wonder whether she might have the beginnings of a respiratory infection. The vet listened to her chest and her lungs were clear, but he thought we'd better put her on antibiotics just in case he'd missed anything. Pumpkin was put on Baytril. The grunting stopped immediately, however the next day she developed diarrhoea and stopped eating completely.I syringe fed her on recovery food and gave her water with added vitamin c, she was such a good girl and more or less took whatever i could give her. After 3 days the diarrhoea had cleared up and she began eating normally.
Oh i have lots of questions about this...has anybody else experienced their piggies grunting like this. I still have no idea what the problem could have been.
I think she was really intolerant of the baytril and this gave her the diarrhoea and made her stop eating. My vet still seems to think that baytril is the best antibiotic to give a guinea pig. Has anyone else had a piggy that's been intolerant to baytril. Any advice would be great:-)
