Someone gave me some old puppy pads thay they no longer need for their dog. I'm unsure whether to use them though as they are very slightly scented.
Should I just bin them?

I cant help with this question :) but i have been wanting to try puppy pads so if it works well please let me know :)

I use puppy pads!
I would bin the scented ones, but highly recommend the unscented ones. I use fleece, and I used to use towels underneath, but the puppy pads are so much easier, not to mention they don't smell nearly as bad. The only thing to watch out for when you first start using them is if your guinea pig is eating them. My current pigs do not, but I had one guinea pig that seemed to think they were quite tasty, and I had to switch back to towels.

I use puppy pads under vetbed, mine chew them if I don't tuck them right under so I have to be careful they can't get at them. I accidently bought scented ones once. I hung a few at a time in the greenhouse or on the washing line and aired the scent out of them so they weren't wasted!

I use puppy pee pads under the hay pan as mine use hay pan as their bathroom as well as eat hay. I buy big bulk of 150 count Dog Pads and cut to lay them under the hay pan. I throw away left over hay along with pee pad so cleaning is a breeze. I clean their hay pans every other day because it gets soiled pretty quickly.

I love this idea! Can you show me how you set up the hay pan? Thanks. :) I need to get this size pads as the smaller ones they push them around and lie under them creating a mess. :) They look so cute but they defeat the purpose of the doggy pad. I love the fact that there are no bad smells whatsoever when using the dog pads, these are great, if I could only get them to stop playing around with the pads. :) Also, one thing I love about the pads is that there is no dust, this is so much healthier for our little munchkins.

Welcome!

My piggies discovered the puppy pee pad underneath all the hay so they dragged the puppy pee pad and set it on top of the hay.

Currently, I use Carefree bedding on the bottom of the hay tray and hay set on top. Carefree bedding works just as well as the puppy pee pad.
There are many uses for puppy pee pads. I currently use it to line the bottom of Finn's wooden cage.

Yes, I had been using Carefree bedding, but it's dusty and does nothing for odor control, I have to be changing it daily and it can get quite costly. Just as you described, my piggies are 'wearing' some of the puppy pad, instead of lying on it. :D Jeeez, such a perfect solution, if they'd just quite using it as a fashion show! :D PS thanks for the warm welcome, so happy to be here. I'm a total newbie to the guinea pig world, new mama here. :D

I should also add that I use puppy pee pads in my piggies' playpen.

My Finn has an indoor wooden cage, and Lara has a big plastic cage with metal bars, both cages are secure with tops.
They live separately for obvious reasons, and I am not a breeder so I would cause trouble if I allowed them to have babies.

Hi guys. I’m a new owner and had a similar question so thought I’d ask here instead of starting a new thread. I set up my first cage yesterday and have put “back 2 nature” absorbant pellets on the bottom of the cage and have put hay on top. Using this would be quite expensive though. I have seen the fleece liners that people use so was considering one of those. Or could we use puppy pads?. Would you just put the puppy pad on it’s own or with hay on top?.

I use washable puppy pads in the bottom of my hutch (brilliant btw) and disposable ones in the top of hutch (as I have to cut them creatively so that my lot can go up and down the ramp) and I just pop a thick layer of hay on top.

Too much hay 1.webp

Yes I've gone back to "back 2 nature" but as my indoor cage really needs a clean-out twice weekly I can only use that for the places they wee a lot! It's way too expensive to line the cage with.

The reason I haven't gone for fleece is that I think you pretty much have to wash it daily, and as my washing machine doesn't remove piggy hair from clothes, this sounds like a biiiiiig extra amount of work.

So most of my cage is lined with puppy pad - newspaper - hay, though tbh I'm just using up the puppy pads as I bought a pack of 30, I'm not convinced they are doing anything more than the newspaper.
