I recently saw a little photo competition for piggies, but they said they would delete "mixed bred photos". What does this mean and is it important (especially in competitions)? I would like to enter Queso into the cavy livestock and rodeo competition (as far as I know it just means dressing him up in a little suit). Do I have to think about pure breed/mixed breed?

Ugh, that would really put me off the competition - the idea that there is some kind of perfection expected. I hate animal showing for that reason. Give me the health robustness of a 'mongrel' any day!
Given that this is not a breeding/showing supportive forum I'm not sure you are likely to find an answer here?

That kind of photo competition doesn't fit into our philosophy .

As a forum , we are very clear that we do not support anything that supports selective breeding . We also do not support the dressing up of guinea pigs .

Hiya,

On the forum from time to time we do run photo competitions as a way of showing off our gorgeous piggies in their natural state. The forum also supports fun piggy shows run by rescues where they don't differentiate between breeds or mixed types. The problem with organised shows is that it creates an elitism between guinea pigs which goes against forums ethos. The same can be said with regard to the dressing up of guinea pigs as it is felt here on the forum that this does not benefit the piggy and whilst many say it doesn't cause them any discomfort or harm we are sure it can cause undue stress to the animal.

As we said at the beginning au naturale is the best when it comes to piggy photos and if you have a look round the forum you will see loads of pigtures of members piggies to drool over and as a hint we would love to see some pigtures of your Queso.

Have a look at this link which will explain all about the forum stance on breeding and showing of piggies and to some degree will explain why the dressing up of piggies is not allowed on the forum.

:agr: With everything @LisaAli has said above as well as @tabelmabel , @annaa and @PiggyOwner.
Showing, dressing up and selective breeding of Guinea pigs are not supported by this forum as explained in the links and post above.

You are clearly an adoring owner and little queso is so lucky to have made his home with you.

Now, if it was a PureGreed class, I think mine might stand a chance :hmm:

Thanks y'all, this helps answer my questions. I didn't think it really mattered, but would like to know more info just so I can understand the difference and how to identify. I'd like to try to understand so I can figure out what kind (or kinds of) pig Queso is (just for fun). But, it's not a personal concern since I just want to adopt another rescue. I was worried it might not look good for competitions, which would really suck. I'd love to make little outfits for Queso, not all the time but sometimes. My mom dresses her dog up (especially for the cold months) and she loves it. I don't think Queso would mind at all, since he's a very brave kind of pig. Plus, the outfits I would make would not be restrictive (mostly like a little cape or hat). And the livestock/rodeo competition is mostly with teenagers, it's small (I think). I wouldn't intentionally put Queso in a stressful situation. But, if I see any of this causing him stress, I'd stop right away. He's already been through so much, I just want his brave little soul to be happy. (nods) I'll definitely give all this some rethinking based on y'alls posts.

I have to admit that I have a few outfits that occasionally my pigs will allow if they are stuffing their faces but I have to be really fast because they are always loose enough that they often just step out of them or run through them, the hats go over the best with my girlies....anyways what I would like to do instead of outfits is come up with some adorable backgrounds to take natural piggie pics in front of and get a full 12 month themed calendar spread. I have 4 pigs so they could each get 2 months alone and then a few group pics. I feel like this would be much cuter and less risk of stress for my pigs! I could use cute themed fleece and some well thought of veggies... Just thought I would share incase some one slightly more ambitious than me would like to give it a go

Some of the pics I've seen of piggies dressed up are adorable, although I was wouldn't fancy trying to wrestle my girls into an outfit XD

I feel that the main issue with shows is the stress of being in a new scary place with strange faces leering in at you. We've got to remember that territory is important for them with their own smells to feel safe and they are prey animals. My piggies get stressed just going to the vets let alone spending hours at a show with a load of strange piggies and people.

Regardless of the possibility of inbreeding I've never liked the idea of pedigrees anyway. Especially in shows because if I was judged by the length of my nose, the size of my bum and the state of my hair I would become quite insecure! XD

Yeah I really hate the idea that I can't take him to competition because "pedigree" would be criteria. Shouldn't he just get a ribbon because he is an awesome, brave and super adorable piggie? XD
