My new baby boy was just brought to the vet. I've had him for two weeks today and last week I noticed a lump under his chin. I thought it was an absess of some type. He went to the vet yesterday, and the lump got bigger. She said it's puss and gave him antibiotics. He's only about three months old so she said it would be strange if it was the roots of his teeth causing it. His teeth looked really good, she said. If it doesn't clear up in two weeks with antibiotics, she wants to remove the puss through surgery. She also suggested xrays if it doesn't clear up. My question is, has anyone else had this problem before? Someone I talked to said it could be problems with his jaw and most of the time with problems with absesses is that they don't do well and that he might die anyway. Does anyone have any suggestions or tips? Thank you.

Hello, sorry I don't really know how to help but there's lots of knowledgable people here that will be able to - hopefully someone will be along soon!

It's an abscess. Very common. It doesn't need surgery; it can be drained at the vets with a needle. He will also need antibiotics. Vet should be able to show you how to flush it out at home. I have been through this several times. The pig will be fine. :)

hello,
i have never had this problem but from what i have read on here abscesses usually burst by themselves and you drain/flush them out many times during the days and usually piggy is on antibiotics and probiotics to protect their tummy. i don't think any piggy has died from abscesses. so talk to your vet about draining the abscess and giving piggy medication and to show you how to keep it clean and free prom pus. good luck. hugs and cuddles to you and your baby. :smitten: :smitten: :smitten:

You need to find a better vet. This sounds like an abcess which needs to be lanced and drained. You cannot properly drain an abcess with a needle it needs to be done with a surgical blade,no aneasthetic required. The hole should be kept open untill all the pus is drained. You will need to backflush 2 to 3 times a day for about 3 or 4 days.
The best thing for backflushing is diluted Hibiscrub. The spray with collodial siver ,and put some high potency manuka honey in the hole.

Do not let the abcess burst on ites own because the puss is very toxic and if the piggy ingests it there is a possibility of septecaemia.

Well, I meant to post the other day but have been so busy. His abcess had already popped a few days ago. Its sort of crusty now and I can't feel it that well cuz he pulls away, so I'm sure it hurts. I believe the abcess is smaller and that could be because it burst or because the antibiotics are working. Now you say this needs to be drained daily, but could it be that the antibiotics could actually work and clear this up? I also agree that she shouldn't need to do surgery on him because of the abcess, but now do you think it's too late? It's just really hard finding a vet who cares for guinea pigs and does nuetering and other things of that nature. That's why I went to this vet. But obviously I shouldn't have taken him there. Thanks for the responses though!

if there is still puss in there then you need to get it out by cleaning it everyday, ive had to do this with my sow who had surgery to remove an abcess that had burst (it left her with an open wound so it needed surgery) and she was left with puss in the tissue, shes been on baytril for 4 weeks and ive been cleaning it everyday and fingers crossed yesterday and today there has been no puss, it does take a while sometimes to get rid of the puss and i dont think baytril will work alone you need to get the puss out otherwise it will keep building up.

i totally agree, you need to flush out all the pus or otherwise it isn't going to get better and the antibiotis won't be doing anything well not much anyways. wishing you and your baby luck. PM one of the moderators on here like maryh and see if she can recomend a vet for you to see. i think there is a post at the top of the index called recomended vets. maybe there is one in your area. but the abcess will need flsuxhing out till all the pus is gone. good luck. hugs and cuddles. :smitten: :smitten: :smitten: please keep us updated.

My boy has almost recovered from an absess, he was lucky as i caught it early so the antibiotics have cleared his up. The vet tried to drain it but in his case the pus was so thick flushing didnt work very well.as others have said keep it clean and flush the pus every day. I hope your piggy gets better soon

I'll give the vet a call in the morning. I'll see what she has to say. If I'm not satisfied with what she says, I guess I'll have to find a new vet. Thanks for all the advice. At least he seems to be doing well and is in good spirits. :)

Good luck love O0 :smitten:
I totally agree with everyone, having been thru it a number of times ::) i know from experience that you must get rid of the puss and keep cleaning it for days afterwards before letting it heal up O0
