The point is (in my humble opinion) that it would be wonderful to stop someone who is contemplating doing it to stop them. But, again in my opinion, it would be preferable if no-one bred them at all as some unsuspecting people down the line will realise that yes, they really are specialised and hard to take care of. Then, they end up in rescue.

That is why I talk in depth about thier possible conditions, offer care sheets and a constant stream of support. If, down the line, the person who bought the pig decides that it was the wrong decision to make I stress that I will take the animal back in any situation.

I think kayjay has made a good point about long-haired guinea pigs. I can imagine the state of some long-hairs kept by people who have lost interest. The poor things end up matted and covered in urine, not to mention skin problems. there are always going to be controversial opinions about new breeds. At the moment I do not think there is enough research or information to prove how long they live or what genetic problems they have. Skinnies live up to their name as they are real "guinea pigs" and only time will tell how successful the breed will be. Personally I think they are really cute, but I'm not sure I would want to own one, although I might be persuaded, If I saw one "in the flesh" so to speak! ;)

They are as beautiful as any piggy. They have thier own individual characters and are so loving and warm. I just wish people would realise ALL pigs are mutilations in some way or another

As you may have noticed by my name and my posts before hand I have skinnies and yes I have recently had a litter born, does that make me a "back yard breeder" ? I have offered my services and information to Barbra many times but I have always had it shoved back in my face.

At no point have I ever referred to you as a backyard breeder skinny pig, so please refrain inferring that I have or trying to stir up trouble.

Stir up trouble ;D try reading my post again. I was merely saying I had offered information and my services or rescue and rehome for the skinny breed to which you replied you would manage without my help

Surely managing without your help is a little different from you inferring that you had it "shoved back in your face?"
I think you should choose your words a little more wisely.

You have shoved my offers of help back in my face a few times, but this is getting off the point.

I have emailed this guy and have had a reply. I have told him the facts surrounding Baldwins and Skinnies so we will just have to see how things work out. I have informed all Skinny and Baldwin breeders I know not to sell to this indiviual without careful thought.

Here we go again war zone time........ :(

How did skinny pigs originate anyway? :)

They were created in a lab in the late 1970's in Canda. If you want a full history of them I can send it to you? Its quite lengthy for here ;D

I've reported the post, so hopefully it will end.

Reported the post? Why? Because its something you don't agree with? I have offered information and had quite a few PM's from people asking for info about them

I agree, I see nothing wrong with differing opinions and discussions and no need to report or lock this thread. TBH on this forum and on RU I get tired of threads being locked for what would seem no reason other than the topic doesn't suit someone's opinion ::)

SkinnyLover has not talked about breeding or anything other than offering help, pictures and advice to someone who has asked for help. If this thread is locked then the original poster can not continue to offer help. Whether you like skinny pigs or not they're here to stay and the only place to get info from at the moment is from someone who has them. As they filter into rescues (and I'm sure they will) then rescue knowledge will increase, surely until then we need to learn everything we can from an open forum?

I am not asking for this thread to be locked, I am objecting to skinny pig dragging my name into this issue, simply because I said in a past post that I would not be passing on guinea pigs to rescuers who breed. It has nothing to do with this thread and I don't know why she felt the need to bring it up?

It has nothing to do Kayjay with the topic not suiting someone's opinion. It was specifically skinnypigs post that I reported.

It must be the way you tar all breeders with the same brush. I have only ever had 3 litters in all the time I have keps cavies, I hardly call that typical breeding. Like I said before, this is taking away from the issue raised.

I have had several emails from the guy in question and he is still insistant on breeding these pigs. I am doing my best to disuade him but it doesnt seem like its working

Unfortunately once someone's decided there's probably little you can do to dissuade them - he probably sees they're rare and thinks he can make some money out of it >:( Let's hope he has second thoughts Maybe some examples of vet bills etc might help? Speak in monetary terms as that's maybe all he'll understand

OK..... so I did send my views through and I have had a response. I am not going to put it all in here word for word but this is basically what was said:

- Under no circumstances will any of the animals be sold to pet shops
- All homes will be fully vetted
- Any animals that are no longer wanted/can be cared for, for any reason can be returned where they will be cared for
- The potential new breeder is consulting with a well known Baldwin breeder in America in order to be fully understand all the care requirements

The guy was not rude to me (which I admit I was expecting him too - people don't usually like negative responses) but very polite. Not once were the animals referred to as stock which I have to admit was nice.

So, I replied back thanking him for responding. I did say that I was pleased with the measures he was taking but that breeding (and then Baldwins in particular) was never going to get my overwhelming support due to the problems that are likely to occur down the line. I think he understood that from my first email but anyway.... I thought it was only fair to post the reply. At the end of the day, we can not stop the breeding, but if he does what he says..... well hopefully he will at least be a 'good' breeder.

I recieved a similar responce. He did ask to come and see my skinnies but I declined for their safety.

Well its a shame he hasnt changed his mind on breeding them, but at least he might be better informed...I really think the whole idea of skinny pigs is totally wrong >:(

I personally think the motive was more about finding out more info about breeding them and making contact with breeders in the hope of acquiring some closer to home? But who really knows?

As long as anyone is breeding them and selling them un neutered, no matter how careful they try or claim to be, they will at some point fall into the "wrong" hands. I agree with you maxthepig, the whole idea of breeding these animals is wrong. If people do want to breed for the "right" reasons, I would have thought there were enough beautiful breeds to choose from and coat types to suit everyone...but it seems I am wrong and some people want to see practically or entirely naked guinea pigs. Why? :(
Just because something is "cute" or "different" doesn't make it ethical to breed and perpetuate it, especially when you are creating something which is quite unnatural and contravenes Mother Nature.

But I agree that some people Will continue to breed these guinea pigs and they will all no doubt have their own reasons for doing so :-\
Unfortunately once they do end up for sale in pet shops, that is when we will (in my opinion) see an explosion in their popularity.
Sadly no breeder, however caring, careful etc they claim and aim to be, will, as I said, never be able to guarantee that a skinny pig they sell will not be bred from, if it is sold entire...That's life. (It's the same for people involved in general recscue and their guineas)

This is a generalisation and not directed at any breeder in particular :)

The main attraction to a lot of emails I get regarding skinnies are for people with hair allergies. I am not *entirely* sure if they are suitable for these people as they do have some hair still
