Hey everyone
I just wanted to know some details and early symptoms of pyometra in sows just in case my sow has it and I can fix it somehow early it would be really helpful

Na I don't see anything wrong last night she was in a strong season and her bum area was kind of all swollen which made me think what if she has an early symptom of pyometra which I don't know:/

And plus she generally seem to be swollen up a bit from that area too nothing else no bleeding or pus or anything wrong with her just swelling

I'm not positive but I thought I'd read before that females genitals can swell up when they're in season. I could be wrong though so I'll tag @Wiebke and @VickiA

Hi!

If you suspect pyometra because the genitalia are swollen, then please contact your vets asap with a picture. Sometimes genitalia swell slightly when sows are in season but this should disappear within hours; however if the swelling is getting worse, then you need see a vet very, very promptly for an antibiotic.

Unfortunately without picture we cannot say anything more. Please be aware that we are a UK based forum and that alerts from posts in the early hours of the night (UK time) may get lost if the forum is very busy.

If your sow has persistently swollen genitals she should see a vet to rule out infection or a urethral stone or other pathology.
