I feed a mix of Oxbow timothy and meadow hay, but I'm struggling to get a decent quality meadow hay now I can no longer buy from Pampered Piggies. :( All my local farms sell by the bale only, and now my pet numbers are lower (:( )I just don't need that sort of quantity anymore.

Has anyone come across any quality meadow hay, eg. online?

Hi there, just noticed you are from Witham- I live in Writtle, Chelmsford! Am also on the lookout for good quality hay in smaller quantities as I will only be getting 2 to start with in the next few weeks. I have heard of dustfreehay website but wasn't sure if anyone had used it before? How many Guineas do you have Pelicano?

Hi to another local! :)

I only have 2 piggies at the moment. Mine aren't that mad on Dust Free Hay, although they are fussy, as they've always had Oxbow timothy. I like to try to mix them up a bit though. I might end up having to go back to the Dust Free Hay.

I've had some good quality hay in the past from a farm at Chignal Smealy, but they only sell by the bale (it's really cheap though).

P.S. Give me a shout if you need any local info! Have had piggies for 9 years now. :)

Pelicano if you would like a sample of the Dust Free Meadow Hay that we have, please pm your address and I will send you out a free small bag to try.

Hiya what farm in chignal? I used to have a horse at Mashbury hall and had no problem getting hay back then! Yes would be great to get some local advice will message * properly tomorrow. We could always share a bale!

Aww thanks so much for the offer. :) It's OK though - I've had it before, so mostly know what it's like. Mine tend to favour the stalky and actively seem to dislike the soft, for some reason.

Erm... what's it called..? Grays Farm, I think. It was recommended to me. The only trouble is, the hay is quite variable, in that they seem to have lots of fields, so it all depends on which field as to what it's like in terms of consistency, although it's lovely and fresh. Mine prefer a stalkier consistency on the whole (so fussy!), although do also eat soft if it's nice and fresh.

I've also heard that there is a good farm in Great Totham, although I'm not sure where. I buy other supplies from Upsons in Hatfield Peverel, but not hay.

Not sure how we'd split a bale (sounds messy! :))), but it would definitely be good if we could.

Splitting a bale is easy-when you feed horses the hay comes in the rectangular bale and once you cut the string it is in sections. Most hay is anyway not sure about the bales you used to get, but then its a matter of just finding the middle section, its generally not messy. I also use Upsons in fact I have just asked them to get some Allen and Page Guinea Mix in for me as they do for another lady. Used to get all my horse stuff from them too they are good. hay is hard to find at the moment anyway especially any that is good. let me know if you hear of anywhere else!

You sound like a hay bale expert - much more so than me!

I might even know the person who the A&P guinea mix at Upsons is for, but I'm not sure! :)) I get Megazorb from there, but not hay, as they often don't have it, and I've never thought it particularly good quality.

Dustfreehay also do timothy hay did you know. I live local to them so go and collect mine, he was showing me the timothy hay when I went last time. Plus they do small boxes too.

Not really just used to hauling it about when I had Jack my horsey!

So how do you find Megazorb?

Not me, but I knew/know a breeder who has ordered A&P from there! PM me who it is! :))

I have used Megazorb for years. It's obviously absorbant, but the down side is that it is very fine and can be a bit dusty. I actually use a thin layer of Finacard (cardboard bedding) on the top at the moment, which works quite well.

We buy the bulk of our hay from a local animal feed merchant (horses, cows etc) and they sell half bales or if you ask nicely will sell in by the leaf.
