Hi all,

I want to disinfect my boys' cage, toys, fleeces etc and bath them and give them the ivermectin etc. to make sure we're not taking any nasties with us to our new home when we move in 4 weeks.

Any advice for how to carry this out?

Is the cage plastic? Is it possible to fit it in the bath?
You can wash it with hot water and either washing up liquid or a cage cleaning spray, I recommend Bob Martin's My Little Friend cage disinfectant. It's very good and it kills all sorts of stuff.

You can wash most fleece in the washing machine at 60 degrees with non bio washing powder and a little bit of vinegar. Dry in the sun and they will smell nice and fresh. The hot water will kill any germs.

Plastic toys can be washed with hot soapy water, if my wooden ones need a wash I rinse them quickly in water and then I dry them in the sun. The sun also kills bacteria.

When my wooden hideys need a wash I wipe them with a damp cloth and then I dry them in the sun.

If you have to bathe your guinea pigs I recommend Gorgeous Guineas conditioning shampoos, they make their fur nice and shiny and they are gentle on their skin.

I wouldn't treat them with any medicines unless you think they have something but in that case a check up at the vets might be a good idea.
I don't believe in using medicines unless they are needed as they can be ineffective after a while.

I hope this helps!

Their night cage is plastic 120x60 standard affair. They have c&c (grids and coroplast) for their day cage. They have a fabric popup playpen with zippable mesh top for garden time on the patio and metal playpen with no floor for garden time on the grass.
I didn't know that about the vinegar! I will give that a try.
They've got a mixture of plastic, wooden and plush toys so I will treat them accordingly. Would you use disinfectant on them?

I don't think they have anything - I've not seen anything - but they've been itching more than usual and it's got me paranoid because I want their new bedroom to be perfect!

I guess you could wash the metal run with a hose and a sponge and if you really want to wash the fabric one you could hand wash it in the bath?

I would wash the plush and plastic toys but I would only rinse the wooden ones and dry them very well so they don't go mouldy.

About the itching, if you can't see anything in their fur maybe it's the washing powder you use? (Assuming you use fleece bedding) Have you changed it recently? Is it non bio? Maybe it wasn't rinsed out properly.

I use vinegar to clean out their cage too. None of this disinfectant lark for my organic boys - and it's cheaper. lol
