spaz

Hey everyone! :) I have a question about my Heist. It seems within the last few months he has gotten very picky about what he eats. Before he use to eat anything I put infront of him, and eat alot. But now he mostly eats his baged guinea pig food, which is pellets and dried vegetables, and he will also eat tons of timothy hay. It's fresh fruits and vegetables that I am having trouble trying to get him to eat. The only way I can get him to eat them is if I hold the food infront of his face and let Spaz eat it infront of him. The only reason he eats it then is because he sees that Spaz is eating it and Heist just likes to take everything Spaz has. Spaz eats fresh vegetables (especially carrots) like their going out of style.

My question is, will not eating very many fresh vegetables effect Heist's health any? Also, could there be any particular reason for Heist becoming so picky, or is he just getting tired with the taste or something? ?

Hi,How old is Heist?,sometimes piggies do get more choosy as they get older. One of my boars used to eat for England but lately he is eating less veg and is getting very choosy.Try some varieties of veg he has not had before.Sometimes big eaters will just have a spell of not eating so much, and then go back to pigging out.You are doing the right thing in encouraging Heist to eat veggies because they are an important part of the diet.Have you tried fresh grass, parsley or other herbs. They will often go for these when they are having a veggie strike.

when I've taken in pig sometimes they have to be encouraged to eat veggies some have actullay been scared of it becasue they've never seen them before, but as this isn't the case with Heist I'd say he is a fusspot and will only eat if he thinks Spaz is going to grab the lot so just keep encouraging him as you are already doing it might be a phase hes going through

Ringo and Star are fussy they wont eat cucumber/celery or corn on the cob but all my other piggies adore these veggies. I reckon he is just being fussy too :) :)

Thanks everyone! I feel much more at ease now; hopefully this picky eating stage will pass soon. I'll keep a close eye on him encourage him to eat and give him a large variety of vegetables! Heist is about 10 months old now. I'll keep you posted! :) :) :)

I find with Squeak she LOVES a veggie for a few weeks and then won't touch it lol - I've just found that if I alternate the veggies and give her different things every week then she doesn't get as bored and stops being as picky ;)

At the moment she won't touch broccoli even though last Friday she couldn't get enough! haha ;D

Bless 'them ;)
