Hi,
I posted a pic of my new piggie in 'photos', I was wondering because he's an Abyssinian I noticed his fur around his bum gets wet and i'm having to clean him up or give him a little bath every few days. It seems to be wet most of the time.

Is this a common problem with this breed?
Is there any type of bedding that is more absorbent to help with this? He was on shredded newspaper, but now using vetbed.

Any advice will be very much appreciated.

Nicola

It has not got anything to do with the breed. Is the wet patch urine? :)

O.k., hate to break it to you but he is not an Abyssinian. The reason why you have to keep doing this is because he is a long haired guinea. Changing to a different bedding would help but you will still have to wash around the area at least once a week. Hope this has helped. :)

My long hair is also called Gus. He's a texel cross and he's hardly ever wet unless he's been out running on the floor and running through his wee. He does get dirtier than the others but if you keep his butt trimmed quite short and clean reguarly it should be fine.

Hmm... this hasnt happened with Angus, my piggy, he is abby too... so maybe trim the fur around his/her behind weekly :D

My long haired girl Candy gets like this too :) especially as Gus and Jack says when she's been running on the floor ;D I use Aubiose as bedding and this seems to help, when I first got her I used newspaper and lots of hay,but didn't find it absorbed the wee :)
