Me again (sorry) just wondering how do I tell if my piggies have mites? I saw some little light brownish things in buttons fur and wondering is this mites? If so what can I do? Piggies are nearly 7weeks old and was told they had been given the mess for mites etc last night

You can't see mites with the eye they live under the skin, lice on the other hand you can see both types running and static, usually as little specks like dust in lighter coats and in darker coats wriggly white things. As they live on the hair follicle they don't nip the skin so spot on treatments don't work so if the breeder treat them with spot on it won't make no difference if they are lice. Only bathing kills lice but at 7 weeks yours are a little too young to bathe, they are one parasite to be less worried about and many piggies have lice and the owners doesn't know about it. It could be hay dust as well so bare that in mind. If you definitely think it might be lice it might be worthwhile contacting Chrissie at Gorgeous Guineas and asking her at what age its ok to use lice n easy shampoo or alternatively see your vet to get them to check its not mites if your concerned :)

Thankyou so much for all your help. It's defiantly Luca and both girls have them. I feel bad for them as they seem to have quite a few and I want to get rid if them :( I looked up on the gorgeous guineas website and the lice shampoo can't be used until piggies are 12 weeks .
They do have a "normal" shampoo that can be used on younger piggies but I'm unsure this would be of any use?
How old do piggies need to be befor bathing anyway

I feel sad :(
X

Use the contact form on the gorgeous guineas website and email chrissie who runs gorgeous guineas she will be able to advise you. I don't bath mine till they are over 3 months and longer if I can help it but if you email her she might be able to tell you what is safe to use :) Don't feel sad its one of those things x

But if its lice it won't kill them as lice don't bite the skin and for a spot on to work they need to. Other option if Chrissie can't help is to go to the vets see what they have to offer :)

Makes me itch just thinking of crawlies...:(

Me too the first time I ever saw lice it was 5pm one evening was combing my black piggy and saw these white wriggly things in his fur, knew they was lice from article I had read, within 10 minutes I was in my car and at pet store getting some shampoo, itched like mad all the way there and back :))

Thankyou all :) I'm the same makes me itch just thinking about them. I emailed gorgeous gineas but no response yet. I just want them gone :( they seem to have alot. Has anyone else had this problem with such young piggies

Ugh itching now!

Problem is they will have been passed on from the mother, they are harmless if they are lice but its not nice and best gotten rid off. Chrissie usually takes a few hours to get back to you :)
