Nellie recently had a very nasty kidney infection, which has possibly left only one functioning kidney. Her urine is now nice and clear, but when left it turns bright orange. I know that the urine can turn orange due to oxidation, but I've never observed it quite as bright and obvious as this.

Does anyone know why her urine now turns bright orange on standing? Should I be concerned?

It is most likely due to a variety of bacteria in the bladder that are usually kept under check by a fully working immune system, but often flourish in the wake of urinary tract problems. Please have her seen a by vet; she may need a bit of antibiotics.

I would also recommend to boost the immune system with vitamin C etc. If necessary ask your vet what is compatible with her condition.

Her urine is perfectly clear, it just turns a very bright orange (oxidation) over time, which I've never seen so obvious.

It is a specific kind of bacteria that causes this extreme oxidisation; the urine is perfectly clear when it leaves the body. ;)

Poor Nellie. I hope she doesn't have to have Zithromax again! She had lots of side effects.

mollie has this at the moment and is being treated for cystitis/uti. on the other hand, my rabbit bisc always has this and nothing is ever found on tests! his urine will go brighter orange when he doesn't drink enough. for him, this is a response to not feeling well so that could be something to consider.

I don't think that she will need a very strong antibiotic again. This is more in the way of a skirmish during retreat. ;)

Scruffs pee oxidised to orange while she was on emeprid a few weeks ago - once they was out of her system it went back to normal again.

How long has she been off the Zithromax? What meds is she currently on? I've had this issue with piggies who have recently been on medication and Simon has said its not of concern. Best to check with him though x

She isn't taking any meds now, just critical care feed; she stopped her metacam over a week ago, and her antibiotics more than three weeks ago I think.

Edit: she stopped her metacam about 5th of June, having been reduced from 02nd June from 2 doses to 1 dose per day. She stopped her antibiotics before the metacam, possibly only three weeks, thinking about it.

I have heard that Zithromax can turn pee orange.

Think I'll do a bit of googling!

Hmm, perhaps it is just the meds coming out of her system.

That's a relief! She was awful on the zithromax, it was horrible :(

I took in some of her stained bedding to the vets to have a look and she though the same.

It took about two weeks before it completely stopped oxidising to orange - I was very worried too the first time I saw it!
