Hi my friend has a question (hope thats ok). She only has web access at work.

One of her piggies (male I think) and about a year old was out in the play pen today and had a little wee, she noticed it was very pink in colour and is concerned it may be pink because there is some blood in it.

The piggie is drinking and eating as normal, eat its pellets and some veg today (including tomato) so he is also thinking could the tomato make the wee pink?

She is toying with the idea of phoning the vet but a call out fee is £105 after opening hours so does not want to start to panic for no reason.

She looks after the piggies well although is not very experienced. They were her daughters who went off to Uni last year and could not take them and my friend decided to keep them with her for a bit of company.

Any advise would be most appreciated.

Could be a UTI (urinary tract infection) I think antibiotics is needed. Hopefully Karen or Mary can advise better.

Has your friend given the piggy any beetroot?,that will stain the urine.Tomato will not do this.Heamaturia is usually a rusty red colour rather than pink.If the piggy is eating o.k. and is not straining nor squeeking when urinating,I would not spend money on a vet call out .Watch him closely over the weekend and if still corncerned take him to a vet on Monday. Most surgeries are open for a few hours on Saturdays,so see how he is in the morning.Check the accomodation and bedding carefully for any more blood.

Thank you both loads, I have just spoken on the phone with her and she says he is as happy as normal, still eating and she caught him weeing a while ago and it looked less red in colour. she is going to see how he is in the morning, her vet is open saturday and sunday so thats quite lucky.

It is just possible that it is something he has ingested.Do you know what she feeds him on,and is she giving any kind of supplement or commercial"treat"?.

Pets at home pellets and just veg (tomato and colliflower today)

None of that would stain the urine. He needs more than cauli and tomato though.Gps need a big variety of veggies. They should not have the same things at every feed, and should not have the same veggies every day.

Could you diplomatically talk to your friend and help her sort the diet out .

LOL yep I sure can, she is a dotty lady who loves the pigs but does need a bit of education. She looks at me and laughs when I have 2 shopping lists, one for us and one for the pigs and rabbit. We go through a sack of carrots a month and their diet consists of every fruit and veg that is suitable for them,

On the food note, can guinea pigs have mushrooms? My bunny goes mad for them and the vet says its ok but what about piggies?

No mushrooms are on the list of foods not to give. I love them though! :)
