Hello

this is a question about my guinea pigs that passed away unexpectedly back in 2015

i had two guinea pigs called Cookie & Oreo. I got them in March 2014. They were both brothers. However after a couple of months. Oreo started drinking a whole bottle of water which was very unusal for him. Apart from this he was being his ussual self and so was Cookie. Unfortuantley i found this out after school on a wednesday. Our local vets were closed and we couldn't get an appoitment till Saturday especially as i had exams at school i couldn't exactly miss. They were both fine on thursday except for Oreo drinking a whole water bottle again. friday morning i had checked and they still seemed fine. I went to school, however when i came home a bit later due to having a PE dentention just for forgetting my PE socks. I found out that Oreo had passed away and the bedding was wet nearby.

Cookie was nearby looking at Oreo. Oreo was only 3 months old. Cookie seemed perfectly fine and his normal self. However one day after his 1st birthday he ending up passing away and then his bedding was very wet nearby like with Oreo but cookie was drinking the normal amount as he never drank a whole bottle. (me and my mum went on holiday for a week when we had them and we left my older brother in charge of looking after my guinea pigs, i almost blamed my brother for the guinea pig deaths because when i came home, the hutch was in the shed but something had managed to gnaw the top of the hutch as the door was fully open. Cookie was litreally still in the hutch and Oreo was underneath. My brother was suprised with this but he did say he cared for them properly. We just assume mabye a wild rat did it as we don't know what else would be able to get into a shed that is closed. When guinea pigs drink a lot. the only illnesses i can think off is diabeties or issues with kidneys. Could any of these be why they passed away?

Do any of you guys have any idea what they might of passed away from especially so quickly?

I’m sorry for your loss. I think the only way to know the cause of death would have been an autopsy. Drinking a lot is linked to something though I’m not entirely sure what so will keep my thoughts to myself.

I'm so sorry for your losses :( Sadly, it's impossible for us to tell you how they died as only a vet can do that after carrying out a post mortem. Drinking a lot of water can be down to lots of issues from diabetes to kidney problems to name a few
So sorry for your losses.
I wish there could be an answer for you

thanks. I guess it’s something I’ll never know the answer too then.

I lost a piggy at the end of last year. He was only 4 months old. He went downhill so quickly. I took him to the vets three times. But we just couldn’t save him. 🙁. Unfortunately it happens sometimes. Take care.

You saw Oreo was drinking a lot and booked a vet appointment, which was the right thing to do. Sadly it was his time. If you're worried about losing your new piggies out the blue, you could do weekly weigh-ins and take them for a check-up at the vet every few months. It might not change things, but it might give you reassurance. Now I have 4 piggies I think the local vet is a bit "oh it's you again", but it puts my mind at ease.
