How often does everyone take their pigs in to the vet for a general check up? or do you only take them in when they are sick? My piggies Buttercup and Truffles so far have not been in for a check up. Is this a good idea to do this or unnecessary? Otherwise, they appear to be perfectly healthy.

you should take them to the vet once every while to have their teeth checked. The ones you cannot see at the back can overgrow and make your piggies ill. when i was younger and didnt know i had two piggies die from overgrown teeth.

I do it myself but some people struggle so take them to the vets to have their nails clipped. its really easy anyway but if you dont feel comfortavle with it, let the vet do it.

Also always check their weight as this is be a good indication that something may be wrong with your piggie if they start to lose weight.

Keep an eye on their fur and skin, checking for lice/ mites/ fungal infections, and all should be fine!

ok thanks for the reply. I have been wanting to take them in for a check up but my mom so far had not taken me, she says they are doing fine and don't need to go and I can't spend the extra money. maybe if I tell her about overgrown teeth problems that can happen, she'll change her mind?

I've never had any tooth problems with any of mine - touch wood - so only go to the vets when they have had mite or colds.:)

Only when ill do I take them. Or if I am concerned about teethy problems, up to now no problems with that. I think Sunshine will give me hell with his though, he is rrefusing to eat hay at the mo! Little buggerlugs!

I talked with my mom she still says no-insists they are fine. I asked her at least to look up vet bills for Shadow my piggy in the clouds now, just to compare prices for 1 versus 2 pigs.

I am going to take Herbie for a general check-up when he has settled a little.

I personally do not take them to the vets for checks only when Ill. My 4 year old boar has met the vet once two years ago for mites and touchwood my others are yet to meet him.

I only take mine if they are poorly i must admit. I cut nails myself and keep an eye out for any teeth warning signs ( dribbling etc ). Vets can be so expensive and i think its quite stressfull for the piggies too.
