I have a 1 year old Guinea Pig, that i rescued from a petstore. I feed him Pure Guinea Pig pellets and Hay with Vitamin C everyday. He gets a bath once a month which i believe is the right amount and i brush him everyday, what can i do to prevent him shedding so much, or is he just lossing his baby fur? Also since its the time of year when its getting hot, what are some ways to keep my piggy cool? What are good things to get for him to keep him happy and healthy, and to keep his teeth down? Please can someone help me keep my piggy happy and healthy. I believe I'm doing well so far, but i just wanna make sure i am.

You will need to feed a balanced diet with plenty vegetables, have a look at the nutrition section on Guinea Lynx. Plenty good quality hay will keep his teeth healthy. When you say you have vitamin C you don't put it in water, do you? These drops are utterly useless - it takes only a couple of hours for vitamin C to break down in water and light, making the water a breeding ground for bacteria and the vitamin C useless.

Some pigs do shed a lot but the chances are high if you got him from a pet store that he has mites and should ideally see a vet for a course of ivermectin.

Well you have had your piggie a year :) you are doing the right thing giving him plenty of hay it makes up about 80% of thier daily diet. You did not mention vegatables were given to your piggie they do love there vegatables and do contain lots vitamin c too.
Shedding some do more than others daily brushing will help with this ;) and a bath every six weeks. Another reply mentioned he might have mites I am sure after a year you would know. But if the hairloss has caused bald patches or sores pop him along to the vets for invemec.

A few questions. :) Have you had him for a year? What guinea pig pellets do you feed him? What breed of guinea pig is he?
You sound like you are doing a brilliant job. To keep him cool in the summer keep him in the shade, put frozen water bottles in the hutch/cage/run, make sure he has plenty of fresh water to drink (check the bottles spout everyday to make sure it is not blokced) and you can also buy a marble surface called Chin-Chillers - you should be able to get them in Pets At Home and some other pet stores or order them across the internet. To keep his teeth down give him plenty of good quality hay, natural chewable toys (such as a grass mat) and things such as apple or willow branches (scrub the branches before you put them in the cage). There are other objects you can buy to keep his teeth down in stores. ;)

Hopes this helps. :)

Yes i had Spook, for about a year. My friend got him from a Pet Store near me, who dont take care of there animals, he had holes in his ears, and he was getting beat up, so she took him home, and she had another guinea pig already home, and she wanted to get him a friend or companion, but they didnt get along because they are males. So she asked if i would take him and i said yes, and i've had him a year. I cant even believe i've had him for so long. He is a mix. But i believe he is mixed with an american short hair and a long hair because his entire body is smooth hair and then at the tip of his butt is log hair. Almost like a tail of hair

His diet contains, Pellets is like a all natural blend of pellets, Crude Protein 22.0%, Crude Fat 3.5%, Crude Fiber 15.0%, Moisture 12.0% and Vitamin C 200mg/Kg The pellets have, wheat, soybean, dehydrated alfalfa meal, corn and other natural ingredients, he is on Timothy and Alfalfa Hay and Hay Cubes which are made from the same kind of hay. His Vitamin C in take. Consists of daily Cucumbers or Carrots, every once in a while fresh spinich, and then at home, we plant an entire garden of Vitamin C vegetables for him. He has one of those Bin Feeders thats meant for Guinea Pigs so i can keep that filled up and he always has food in there. He also has wood pieces that he chews on.

Sounds like you are doing fine. When he sheds, is it the long hair or smooth hair? Does he come out much?

The hair that comes out is long hair. Yes he comes out everyday with one on one interaction with me, and my friend down the 2nd floor as a guinea pig which comes to visit him regularily and we take them outside on nice warm days, there supervised of course so they dont get too hot, I always have my windows open when I'm in the room with him, but other wise i keep a fan running in my room which keeps my room pretty cool.

O.K. Like everyone has said some guineas shed more then others. If he is shedding more then what you think is normal it may be worth a visit to the vets. But providing his coat looks healthy, it's not thin or slightly bald in places I don't think you have anything to worry about. It would be helpful if you had a picture of him. :)

my maisy(in the photo gallery WHAT AM I)Is an american short hair but she also has quite long hair on her back end,so she must have some long hair in her from somewhere,it's longer than my other piggies, she sheds quite a bit too, but i brush her every day which helps.

he is sooooo cute, his hair doesn't look long on his butt in the photo, but neither does maisys, but i know what you mean.he looks fine to me, and like i said maisy malts a fair bit too.

Awww cute. So his hair is longer at the back but it is not long hair? Guineas of his length often shed quite a bit of hair, I don't think you have anything to be concerned about. If you still feel more is coming out then what there should be then take him to the vets. :)
