Hello! I’m new to guinea pigs so sorry for my lack of knowledge and etiquette. I purchased two young (intact) males for my kids end of November. They were housed together and we’ve had zero issues. Last week one of them seemed to throw up on my daughter (I wasn’t in the room). After doing some research, I have discovered that while they can spit up maybe, they can’t throw up. There has never been any signs in their cage of vomiting. Today it seemed to happen again. My daughter said she didn’t see it come out of their mouths but felt it. It’s rather gelatinous and transparent. They don’t appear to be ill or acting funny, and they are also gaining weight. I’m curious if maybe it’s actually semen instead of vomit? I would post a photo if I could. Does anyone have any ideas? Thank you so much!

Welcome to the forum

They will put their penis in their mouth and will ejaculate into their mouths so it is possible for you to see semen/boar glue in and around their mouths.

Seeing boar glue on them - it may be their own or it could be their cage mate though humping each other - is a common thing. It dries rock hard so unless you see it happen and can wipe it off, once it has dried it has to be either left akin to drop off on its own or be cut out of the hair with scissors.

If a piggy is acting unwell and appears to be vomiting, then you are right, they are unable to vomit. If food or saliva is coming back out of the mouth of an unwell piggy then that is an emergency situation as it means they are physically unable to swallow or there is an issue somewhere along the digestive tract (could be anywhere from mouth to anus) Preventing food from going down.

Thank you so much! I’m so thankful the forum exists! I never thought I’d have so much fun with guinea pigs. I think I’m more attached than my kids at this point. I’ll attach a photo of what was on my daughter’s pants. She thinks it was from his mouth. But all of that makes sense. Once I realized it wasn’t colored or bits of food, I started to wonder if maybe this was the case (it just seems large). No other signs of distress or movements of vomiting. I really appreciate you all taking the time to answer and be so welcoming.
