Hi Everyone this is my 1st post. I currently have an 8mth old piggy named Oreo. Today at work I got a piggy released into our care. Let's just say, I'm super happy the gentleman brought him in bc he does not deserve to own one! Well, after I let him calm down I reached and and what the sweetest piggy ever! While I was holding him, i noticed his "raptor: claws (don't worry i cut them back) but he was losing quite a bit of hair and I was getting covered in with white and black flakes (more black). The hair i figure is bc they was nothing but the cage for this poor piggy to rub on. He was on Cedar bedding, and had "cheap" food, no hay. I tried to brush but he was just getting way to excited and wanted him to calm down and I will do it some tmw. My question is, he is covered in some kind of dirt/flaky stuff. It's bad, but bc he is solid black with coarse "crazy" hair I can't make out if it is in his hair or on his body. He doesn't itch, but then i got thinking if this is his normal then maybe he is use to it. He is such a sweetheart and I am trying to find a way to bring him home. (Oreo is a male also, and I just want friends not enemies nor to bring home any piggy colds) What should I do about this "flaky coverage"? Should I just give him a quick bath? If so what can I use on him that will not hurt him but get whatever it is off with out a drag out bath time. I don't want to stress him out. Thanks for any information and if you need more I can try to answer, the guy didn't say much but he didn't want it anymore.

Its always best to give any new piggy s vet check especially one from less than ideal circumstances. Oh and welcome to the forum.

Hi and welcome to the forum. It sounds like your piggy could be suffering from mites or lice and often shop brought products are not strong enough to resolve the issue. As the piggy was kept in such a bad condition I would recommend a vet check to ensure that you aren't exposing Oreo to any illnesses that might affect him also. There are a number of good guinea pig vets in your state though I appreciate that US states are fairly large so I am hoping one of these is close to you Veterinarians: Florida - Guinea Lynx Records
