My sow Melody is 1.8 years old now, when she was a baby she had many problems and whether she would survive was 50:50, but with supportive care she thankfully did make it through and now she lives a pretty normal life, but I never did get any straight answers as to what her problem was so I thought I'd come here, tell you her story and see what you guys make of it, and if you can advise on what I can do for her.

She was 8 weeks old when I got her from a small local family run pet store, they are lovely people and their piggies are really nice, I currently have 5 from there and they are all lovely. Melody however was always different to the others, she was very small and underweight when I got her, almost half the size of the others her age. After getting her home she really struggled to settle in, she was terrified of the other piggies and would overreact whenever one came near her, she would squeal, tilt her head to one side, shiver/shake, shift her weight from one side to the other repeatedly and then walk in circles, sometimes falling over to one side. I immediately took her to the vet as I suspected an ear infection and they gave her some antibiotics, there wasn't an obvious infection but her ear was a little waxy, they cleaned it up for her.

Anyway during and after treatment I noticed she was still head tilting, circling, shivering/shaking, shifting her weight, falling over and crying, she seemed to have extreme fear and anxiety of other piggies and this behaviour was a response to stress for her. I still don't know for sure if this was the problem but it was how it looked to me. Whenever this happened I would take her out and comfort her, human support was something that really helped her, she is very much a people pig.

I also think she was small and thin due to being too afraid to eat incase the other pigs bullied her, because of this I had to take her away from the others and feed her every day, I also topped up with critical care syringe feed, she always ate really well when with her human friends instead of her piggy friends. I had to feed her separately until she was 6 months old, she got better and better and eventually built up the strength and confidence to stand up for herself with the other piggies, she is now completely fine.

I took her to a few vets and none could give straight answers but I think this is a tricky situation, they couldn't find anything physically wrong with her and said she likely has neurological problems that have improved with time and supportive care. Melody also has had a breathing problem since birth, she cannot wheek and makes a clicking noise when breathing, doesn't seem to affect her at all but my vet said she may have a heart problem which can also explain why she is smaller, had such a bad response to stress and is an extremely quiet pig in general.

What do you think is happening with her? This girl is the love of my life and incredibly special to me.

@CavyConnoisseur How is she now? Is she still smaller than the other pigs? Does she still have head tilt?

Neurological issues are very difficult to exactly diagnose. My Jon has something but the vet is unable to pinpoint exactly what it is.

It sounds like that unfortunately you've got all of the answers you ever will with Melody. She had some sort of neurological issue when she was born. She may have been born with it and had a seizure or stroke after birth.

The heart issue will need an xray to confirm. I've had a few pigs with broken wheekers who either huff or make no wheek at all. It was never related to any other issue.

Melody is beautiful I can see why you have such a special relationship, she is a lucky girl to have such a caring owner. I suspect Melody is overcoming her neurological problems because of your loving care and her improved confidence comes from you. May her improvement continue and lead her to live a long and happy life.

I have to agree. Neurological problems are almost impossible to diagnose, but you seem to have found the best way forward for her and your love and support clearly help Melody to live a normal (ish) life. You should be proud of your success (both of you).

She doesn't have a head tilt any more, that stopped when she was about 6 months and her other symptoms slowly got better afterwards too, I forgot to mention she also rolled her eyes and would fall to one side, it looked like she was having seizures too but as I said she doesn't have this anymore and it slowly improved with time, everything stopped completely when she turned about 1 year old. She still has the breathing issue though, that hasn't improved but does appear to slowly be getting louder so I think you're right and she needs a chest xray at this point.

Melody is still very quiet, she's undoubtedly my most cuddly pig, she often sleeps in my bed with me, I have fallen asleep sometimes too and when I wake up she is always sleeping next to me, I just love her so much, she has the most unusual and special personality!

I do think she had a neurological issue from birth, but is it possible they can improve with time like with Melody?

It's definitely possible. One of my boys had a seizure that left him with head tilt. He wasn't able to walk for a few weeks but slowly gained the ability back. He was a bit wonky but was healthy otherwise.

Have you tried seeing how she reacts to having a bowl of steaming water near to her? If it helps then that could point to damaged airways. If not then at least it was worth a try, and it's something ruled out before the xray is booked.

I am hoping to get some feedback from this forum. I got my Bella from a local pet store. Within a week her head started wobbling like a bobble head doll. As long as she was still, she wouldn't wobble. As soon as she would try to find food, her head would bobble uncontrollably. She couldn't walk straight without falling over. I took her to the pet store vet and they have been treating her for an ear infection but they are now saying she may have been dropped and has a neurologic condition. I haven't gotten the final report but they are saying she will need extra TLC. I need some advice on what that would be. Do they make neck braces for guinea pigs? I don't want to give up on this baby. She is my favorite. Any advice is appreciated.
