Quick fix for dusty bedding

@Wiebke I'm personally going to just buy some fleece liners as I like the idea of having minimal dust and I find it easier to just roll up shake off and wash without woodshavings etc going everywhere and it's obviously the best thing in terms of dust. I have got rid of the hay which wasn't dust extracted. The meadow hay I bought does seem quite good I think it's called pure pastures meadow hay. She's still doing it quite badly and I hate hearing it. I'm wheeling their cage into my room for the night so I can keep an eye on her.

I have also bought a nebuliser which the vet said to try as well. If none of this works then it's clearly not curable. Thankyou

Is the meadow you are using dust extracted? A nice name doesn't say anything about the quality of the process.

I use fleece msyself and have done for a good decade.

@Wiebke yes, it's dust extracted. Is there a recommendation on time between bisolvon doses? I did one a couple of hours ago and hoping to do one at around 12 so it helps her through the night. How soon can it take a pig to get over a reaction or allergy to dust etc? I'm expecting an instant relief if I hit the nail on the head with the problem. She's doing some massive sneezes now and again

Hello,

My vet has given me a F10 solution as her breathing is very bad at the moment. It helps momentarily but she's back to bad breathing again.

I was wondering if I can do it as and when I want?

I don’t have experience with this but I would say the best thing to do is follow the advice that your vet has given you about using it.

@Wiebke @PigglePuggle @Piggies&buns can you help with the above question?
@IzzyGad how did the vet say you should use it?

@Wiebke @Siikibam @Betsy

Below is a vide of my poorly guniea pig(YouTube link). How the vets don't think this is a URI I don't know. Thing is they have checked the lungs temperature about 5 times now. What do you think. To me this breathing is terrible and I have done everything and sadly I think she's gonna pass away. I cannot spend anymore time than I have the last few days. She's by my bed and I'm monitoring her all night and trying to help etc.

Vets have done all checks on lungs and body. She's on Baytril, Nebuliser, Bisolvon I think it's a lost cause. We have spent about 600 on the guniea pig and it's getting out of hand. I love her so much, but sadly I don't think this is curable and she looks in distress. She's not even a year old. The noise definitely comes from the nose. I personally think it could be pneumonia. She's eating and squeking for food and currently eating as I write this. It's like when she's asleep she struggles. The only thing I haven't tried is a anti histamine of some sort but I don't know what I can use for that. Changed hay, bedding, room as well. Spent the whole weekend up the vets. She's foraging round the cage now with a very noisy sound from the nose. Yes that's ribena on her nose from where I was trying to syringe after antibiotics.

She's now decided to run around the cage and popcorn. I just don't know what's going on here.

Hi!

I am very sorry! Diaphragmic breathing (i.e. heaving sides) is usually a symptom of the build-up of fluid in either the lungs (pneumonia) or the chest cavity (heart insufficiency or something pushing on the heart); it is a usually a red flag symptom.
However, guinea pigs have very small and narrow airways and can't really breathe through their mouths so in your case it is more likely due to the nose being blocked, even more so when she is sleeping. Any little obstruction of the nasal passages creates therefore quite a lot of noise.
Are her teeth OK? It is extremely rare but a tooth can grow the wrong way and into the nose.

However, your girl being still active and eating is a very good sign.

@Wiebke :( are you saying you think she has a red flag symptom or it's more likely the blocked nose? Her nose is 100 percent congested and you can hear it when she smells for food. I believe her teeth were checked yeah and no problems

In your case I think the heaving breathing is because of the blocked nose and she struggles to get enough air in and out - which is rather unusual in its severity.

Could you place a bowl of steaming water next to the cage and keep it refreshed to see whether that can help ease the breathing?
How has your vet said to use the F10? (The antiseptic solution that is often used in nebulising).

@Wiebke That's exactly what the vets have told me and I'm trying everything to get her de congested! They have said the lungs sound fine and no noise there but there is noise in the nose. When she's resting it gets really bad. I'm not sure what I can try. It's like she's constantly going to be bunged up. I just don't know anymore

@Wiebke just put a big bowl of steaming water and a few drops of olbas in there and covered the cage so the steam gets in there nicely. Seems a little better but still breathing noise through nose.

The vets told me to use 0.1 ml and add 25ml to it and put her in a chamber like box and steam it. Once daily for 20 mins

I think @Betsy can advise you better on how to contruct a nebuliser and how often/how long you can use it in a day.

Don't expect miracles or any beathing noises to disappear instantly; right now you are looking for ways to ease the breathing/the blockage as much as you can wichever way.

@Wiebke is Olbas okay to use? Few drops in the steamed water near th cage. She has done some big sneezes since and running round!

F10 antiseptic solution needs to be used for nebulisation, not F10 discifectant . usually nebulise twice aday....12 hours apart.increase to 4 times aday if piggie is in distress.i have used nebulisation in a respiratory compromised piggy.let all the solution in the chamber all be used up/nebulise. i hope your piggie gets better soon.

Not me @Wiebke never had to use a nebuliser on a piggy!

Hi,

I used woodshavings but read about dust issues so changed to megazorb and I actually found that more dusty, there was alot of dust when I was cleaning them out. So then I tried carefresh and that was fine but expensive so I'm now using vet bedding and I love it! Expensive initially as I wanted two full sets but it's so easy to change and clean their house out. I use towels underneath and then change every two days and wash on 60°.

I'm a man! I agree with your dad! Is there anyway I can change my username? (Long story)

Oh Absolutely! My Dad always said that a way to a man's heart is through his stomach. Why only a man's? Why not mine too? I love my food which is probably why I've been at Slimming World on and off for 18 years!

Yeah, I am the daughter, sister and wife to men like that... Call it survival practice!

For @IzzyGad . This is the kind of biscuit splash we are talking about!

I'm really too old to be having guniea pigs, but I love them! Just warm to me. I think their fabulous animals.

@Wiebke on a different note I literally thought my Fudge had gone. She was led down although breathing a little better. I read somewhere that if they sprawl out and sleep their content?

I think my girlfriend of four years breaking up with me at lockdown is a good reason! @sport_billy

Very sorry! Lockdown is the kind of situation that really tests everybody. Having an ill piggy to worry about on top of it all makes it even harder. :(

Can you be too old for a guinea pig?!?🤔
