Just a quick question- I am wondering who can tell me the symptoms of bloat. Since Sundae has been sick (facial abscess/teeth issues) she had lost a lot of weight. She has definitely gained a lot back, but it seems to be mostly in her midsection/abdomen (she still looks slimmer at the shoulders.) My older guinea pig is built that way, but Sundae previously had her weight distributed more evenly. I keep worrying that the abdominal weight gain could be bloat. She appears to be eating/drinking normally and is normally active and doesn't seem to be in any discomfort. I just fed her some lettuce in the cage and she stood up against the bars to mooch off me and scarfed it right down. If she had bloat, she would appear sick or uncomfortable, right?

If you tap her tummy does it sound hollow? That is one of the main signs of bloat, is she pooing ok?

Also they can get fluid bloat too which if you gently sway her from side to side by your ear you would hear a sloshing sound.

They do tend to appear uncomfortable when they have either kind of bloat and if you have any suspicions I would not feed her lettuce. If you are unsure best to get the vet to check her out.

Thanks for the info! She doesn't sound hollow or sloshy and is, again, totally fine today in terms of behaviour, running around and eating and begging for food. I wonder if she is just going to have that 'older pig' pear shape from now on as she puts weight back on. She lost almost a pound during her bout with bad teeth/abscess, so she had a lot to put back on. I am wondering if it just looks more apparent to me on her because she is short haired so I can really see her contours easily. My other piggy is a sheltie cross and, although she has had that pear shape for a long time, she also has a ton of fur around her face and neck that makes her look more round.

It could well be that, a lot of my sows have that shape. If you are at all concerned though then best to see a vet.

Rocky did the Same he lost a pound when he was really ill he put it back on but as fat not muscle

hi there check that piggie is pooing if so then it might not be bloat, tap on belly if it sounds hollow and no poos then definitely bloat, i keep infacol, colic med for babies, as this clears bloat up without having to go to a vet, as this stresses out piggie, use 0.3ml depending on how bad, 1 to 3 times daily.
