Cream was given Oxbow Critical Care and told to be given it 3 times a day, but since she’s been home, she’s been eating as normal. Eating her pellets... her hay... drinking water, all on her own. I don’t want to over feed her though I don’t think that would happen but should I still being giving her the food 3 times a day when she’s already eating on her own? (I still will, just wondering if it’s completely necessary since she’s recovering fast) Thank you! :)

Firstly, why is she on the critical care?

My boy Steve is recovering from bloat and I’ve been syringe feeding. He has recently started eating a bit more on his own and I could in theory stop I suppose however I shall continue due to the weight he lost before. I aim to get him back up to the healthy weight and to ensure his gut is still moving.

She is on Critical Care because of her surgery yesterday. As I said, she has been acting and eating as she was before the surgery. I do agree though, since she has lost weight, I'll still give it to her so she can increase her health and weight. :)

How are you feeding the critical care? My boy Elvis had surgery recently and he was eating some by himself but I kept giving him some top up feeds to make sure he didn't lose weight. At first I syringe fed him but soon I started to feed him off a spoon rather than syringing it in and sometimes I left a bowl in the cage so he could eat that for himself too. Someone though I can't remember who suggested mashing a bit of banana into it to encourage them to eat for themselves more. I hope this helps 🙂

Hello!

It's good that your guinea pig seems perky and is behaving normally following her surgery. However, be aware that you cannot tell how much Cream is eating by watching her (especially when it comes to hay consumption, which should be 80% of her diet).

You need to weigh her daily at the same time while she is recovering from surgery and be guided by her weight as to whether she needs extra feeding support.
