Hi there.
My little Pascal had what the vet said may have been the beginnings of a *.R.I. a few months back. He was treated and seemed to be completely over it... However, for a few weeks now, he has been sneezing quite a bit. He's been acting perfectly normal.... running about, begging for treats, pestering his roomie... he hasn't had any discharge, etc. About a week ago, he actually woke me up during the night because he was wheezing and seemed to be coughing. Not just little chokey coughs like when he eats too quickly... actual coughs. I of course made him an appointment right away, but the exotics vet wouldn't be at the office until 2 days later. By then (yesterday), he seemed perfectly normal again, minus the sneezing. I took him anyways and the vet said it COULD be a *.R.I., but he hasn't had any nasal discharge, his chest sounded fine, and Harley (my other pig) would be showing symptoms by now. He gave him a shot of Convenia "just in case." Then he told me it was most likely allergies & to stop using wood shavings. I switched to fleece, but he is still sneezing! This worries me. I've been watching him like a hawk. He's been eating/drinking and his poops look normal, but he's sort of just been hiding in his pigloo all day. (He usually popcorns around whenever he hears me rustle a bag or turn on the kitchen light) :( :{

Long story short: what could cause sneezing, random bouts of wheezing & coughing, but no discharge or other *.R.I. symptoms...?

As far as I'm aware guinea pigs should not be given Convenia! The data leaflet explains it should not be given to Penicillin allergic animals (which includes guinea pigs). I would ring up your vets and ask about this asap. For now keep a close eye on them. I have never heard of convenia ever being used in guinea pigs, so unless your vet is an ace exotics vet with more knowledge than i then i would be cautious as there would seem no need for this?

As for the respiratory signs, have you thought about other allagens? From outside the cage? Deoderants, fragrance things, even plants which may be pollenating?

Pascal had Convenia the first time he was sick. I researched it and was furious that the vet would give it to him... However, I called him and he explained that Convenia can't ever be given to rabbits, but is usually safe for guinea pigs. He also explained that injecting it as he did is a lot safer than giving it orally. I would rather just administer an antibiotic myself every day, but I like my vet and I am going to trust him on this... it did seem to work the first time and Pascal had no negative side effects.

I'm very careful not to burn candles or anything near their cage, there are no plants, nothing that could be giving him allergies. :/ Could he be allergic to his hay...? That would be so depressing :(
