Monday was a very sad day at Tees Valley Guinea Pig Rescue. I went into the piggy room to find that Minnie had passed away. She was just over 8-years-old possibly older. She had been losing more weight that I would have liked & suspected she might not have long. She was at the vets only 4 days earlier when nothing could be found wrong. I suspected that she wasn't right in the morning when she didn't come out eagerly for her fresh grass & was about to give her some syringe feed when I found her. She's my first piggy to die from old age & even though I had her for only half her life it was longer than any of my first 3 piggies who had died well before the age of four.

Her story from when I took her in on April 7th 2013 after seeing this ad on TGPF "Minnie lone ginger sow seeks new huspig/herd/or lady friends" is as follows. She had been part of a trio but her last friend Twirl had just passed away & her owner thought it would be better for her to go to live with some other piggies. After failing to bond with our existing 3 girls we decided to adopt a neutered boy pending a good bonding session. This took place on June 1st 2013 & Minnie ended up with a lovely boyfriend, Mitch who was over 2 years her junior.

After a couple of months of having Minnie & Mitch in adjoining run to Minky, Mother & Mousey I tried them all together on the lawn for 3 consecutive days then on August 18th I took the plunge and took the centre divider out of their run & put them all in the cleaned out run together & it was a great success.

After adopting neutered Teddy boy Rex in October 2013 I had a reshuffle when Minnie & Minky were bonded with Rex.

In February 2014 after Mousey had sadly passed away in January after a short illness & I also got Rhubarb & Custard. I had another reshuffle where Minnie went back with Mother & Mitch.

When I rescued Peach, Pepper & Pixie in May 2014 I needed to do another reshuffle to get 2 groups of 5 & Minnie was now living with Rhubarb, Custard, Minky & Rex. This became her steady group until Custard & Minky passed away in December 2015 & Rex passed away in July 2016 leaving Minnie & Rhubarb as a pair.

Bitsy joined them on December 8th but this was a short lived trio as she passed away after an op on February 11th

Shortly before Bitsy passed away Danny had a head tilt & was not doing too well by himself. He had been neutered in December and was safe now so after Bitsy passed he was tried with the girls who didn't object & it really helped him through his illness. He is still with Rhubarb.

Sorry if I've bored you with the second half of Minnie's life story but I wanted to show what a full & happy life she had here. Prior to coming here, all I know is that she had 4 previous owners. She came here as a very feisty girl who wouldn't get on with others & developed into a very adaptable piggy who lived a full life. She started off ginger & turned brown but was heading back to ginger in her last few months. I'll miss her cheeky enquiring little face. She will be sadly missed by me & Sue. R.I.P. my special girl

Aw I'm sorry for your loss. You really got to know her well and found the right friends for her, and brought out the best in her. I'm so glad she found stability after so many homes before. Eight is a good age.
Be at the Bridge Minnie x

So sorry to hear about Minnie, but what an extraordinary life she led!
She might have only spent half of it with you, but it is clear she had a wonderful time, with lots of love and various friends over the years, which is about as much as any piggie could hope for.
Sweet dreams Minnie pig.

RIP Minnie, such a lovely piggy 8 years is a wonderful achievement, all down to your love & attention, stewybus,
Run free to the bridge Minnie
