Hi,
I have been offered a rabbit from a work friend who doesnt want it anymore cos she says the noise of him biting the cage bars are annoying.

Why does it bite the bars, is it bored or something wrong with it?

what do i have to do to look after it.
does it need veg?
what food?
injections?
can i let it out to play with my piggies?
what size cage should it have? (it is outside at my friends house in a small hutch, seems to be about 3 foot long)

any advice will be very much appreciated as i have never had rabbits before.

thank you

It's biting the bars because it's bored and yes, rabbits do need vegetables. I feed mine Chudleys Rabbit Royale and totally recommend it, but many others will recommend pellets as it prevents selective feeding, but if you feed the right amount they shouldn't selectively eat anyway. They need to be innocalated against VHD and Myxi but your vet will tell you more about it. I wouldn't let it out with the piggies as one kick can killl your piggies. The bigger the better is the general rule for rabbits O0

Hi Cazza,
Well i have only had rabbits as a kid & the hutch was outside, but the rabbit was always allowed indoors each day when we let him out!
These day if I were to have a rabbit then I would house him indoors without question. Minimum hutch size should be 4' long & i think that's by 2'.

Yes feed him fresh veg daily. I don't know about the dry mix, i expect there is a pellet feed to save picky eating, just as is advised for feeding of guineas & chinchillas.

Boredom could be why he bites the cage, it maybe he feels he needs something to bite to get his teeth down as they constantly grow just like rodents (rabbits aren't strictly rodents apparently).

As for him playing out with the piggies, probably best not as if he accidently kicks one of them he will harm him badly or fatally.

Hope this helps abit & good luck with the bun O0

No rabbits aren't rodents ;)

He will be chewing the bars because he's bored. Rabbits aren't that different to guinea pigs (care wise) although they need more space. As for dry food, some people like mix and others prefer pellets. It depends on what your rabbit will eat. I tried to feed mine on pellets but none of them ate it and they started to lose weight so they have been kept on a mix and they don't select feed.

Rabbits need company, so if you are just getting one from your friend, you'll need to get him/her a friend.

Just be careful of feeding it veggies to start with, as you don't know how much this rabbit is used to them and if you feed it too much it will give it the runs and possibly bloat etc....

Not everyone has their rabbits vaccinated against VHD and Myxi, again that's up to you and it not a must.

Don't let it out with your guineas...some rabbits have bad tempers and wont tolerate a little guineas running around them.

Good luck with your new bunny :)

thanks for the advice.
do you have to cut their nails like piggies and bath them?
can you put them on blankets and fleeces, like piggies?( in the cage)

can i get another friend for him, i dont know how old he is? do you recommend a younger rabbit ?

thank you

what veg do they eat and how often.

You can put them in c&c cages, but they need to be really high and bunnies can jump 3ft easily.

Like i said you do need to get it friend, and because you've said 'him' you'll need to get him neutered (if he's not already) and then get a female as a companion.

You do need to cut their nails but you should never bath a rabbit unless really necessary...like he has bad mites etc.....

You can put blankets down but they probably wont last long. The bunny will chew and dig at it ::)

Would i be able to get a male friend for him? or would it just fight with him?

They probably would to be honest. Male bunnies can get along fine if they are brothers or have been together since they were very young (I have 3 four year old bonded males and they are fine, but they are brothers)

A neutered male and female is the best option O0 I don't think it really matters on what age the female is that you'd bond with him either :)

? The bonding can be really hard work! The local rescue near me,do the bonding for you at their place. Then once paired they return together! :smitten:
