rabbit breeding.... what do you think?

my work colleague has a small farm with chickens and geese.
she has a female rabbit, and she took it to a breeder for her to get impregnated, the breeder put one male with her and then straight away another one.
which i thought was a bit weird.
I dont know amything about rabbits so i dont know if this was ok or not.
My colleague donesnt know anything about rabbits either.
i told her it was not right just breeding them, cos they will keep breeding all the time.she said she was going to make 2 seperate pens for them to ive in(one for girls and one for the boys)
i am not happy about it.
What do you think?
 
Theres currently around 30,000 rabbits in rescues, plus numerous rabbit stuck in hutches at the bottoms of gardens...why add to the population?
 
thats what i think but she wont listen to me.
she is adamant she is going to keep them.
 
She will have to make more than 2 separate pens. Once bucks (boys) grow up in most cases they will start to fight (not all however). So they will need neutered if she's any hope of keeping the boys together.... A rabbit has been known to have up 12 babies! What if she has 12 babies and all of them are boys?

The fact that you've said you're friend knows nothing about rabbits worries me....why breed them if she doesn't know what she's doing? What happens if the mother dies during birth or shortly afterwards? What happens if she splits the buck's from the doe's too late? What would she do if the babies were deformed (unlikely but could happen)

Unfortunately now though, the female is pregnant so in 32 days time we will have yet more bunnies in the world ::) There is too many already and she's adding to the problem.

By the sound of it she hasn't thought it through properly and once her fluffy babies grow up and start fighting they will just another rescues statistic!
 
I know this is an anti breeding forum but I used to show and breed rabbits I was brc reg for about 8 years mainly showing Lionheads and the occasional mini lop. I really do hope she has thought through the consequenses. My largest litter was 16 however I did loose one bub at about 11 days old as the litter was so large. Female rabbits can be sexually mature at 14 weeks but it should be left till at least 6 months. Bucks I would NEVER keep together ( there are exceptions) especially if theyre not neutered if theres does around they may fight to the death. Rabbits are induced ovulators so dont need to be "in season" to mate the actual act of mating releases the eggs to be fertalized also if a bun is already pregnant and the buck mates again eggs can become fertalised again from the other ovary so when she gives birth both lots of kits will be born together the first ok but the second very under developed and they will die. They can mate as soon as they've given birth and gestation is around 30 days so if the bucks are left in with the does the first litter may not be fully weaned as the next litter are born. I really would try to discourage her as there are so many unwanted rabbits. Back to back breeding is cruel and unnessecary but can happen very easily it can easily weaken a doe making her poorly. Will she have them vaccinated? All my buns including the babies were all vaccinated for mixi and vhd. I hope she doesn't think she can make money from selling the young ones breeding is expensive as you want the best food bedding etc to keep mum and the babies healthy What if mum dies? or rejects the litter? What if there are peanut babies? Before she knows it she could have over 100 rabbits

I have finally come to my senses thats why I gave up showing (about 12 months ago)There are so many unwanted bunnies that are in need of homes and by showing you are constantly breeding to get better buns.
I have just had my last buck neutered so he can live with the girlies
 
i am very upset about this.

she took her doe to a lady she found in the paper, just to mate her, twice, with different bucks, it was over very quickly.

i dont think she will vaccinate them.

she knows nothing about rabbits at all.
she just thinks the mother rabbit will do it all by herself and then she will have lovely fluffy babies.
 
Peanuts are caused by when the offspring get the double dose of the dwarfing gene and they don't live.
 
Myxi and VHD are deadly to rabbits that get them.
They were man made diseases released to kill wild rabbits...and it spreads by fly bites to pet ones too.

Correct me if some of this is wrong...

i agree with you i also breed lionheads and i dont just do it for the sake of it ,,and as for putting 2 bucks to her 1 after the other that was very irresponsible too .
 
she said that the lady that had the buck rabbits will keep coming to here home and show her what to do.
she said if her rabbit does reject the babies this lady will fetch one of her mummy rabbits to feed them.
this lady had 70 rabbits, dont know if she is a proper breeder or not.


I'm just gonna let her get on with it, cos she says its all in hand, but I'm still not happy about it.

Daft woman. She will have sweet little babies for 2-3 months and then hormonal monsters spraying, fighting, getting territorial, horrible fight wounds, huge vet bills and a constant headache for the rest of the time before she gives them away to someone who will most likely abuse them :'( :'( :'(

Rabbits are expensive to keep properly but of course cheap to abuse :'(

She may be able to keep them together. I have 2 groups of 3 girls together and a group of 3 boys together (neutered) So it does work, but if she want lots of bunnies running around her farm she should have gone to a rescue and rehomed some!
 
I agree with Guinea-Tia-Flossie She may be able to keep the does together i have 7 all together no probs what so ever but they also have a quarter of the garden i think space is an issue. I think if she wanted lots of bunnies the right way to go about it is to go to a rehoming centre. I wonder how many of her "bubs" will end up being rehomed? :'(
 
Question: You said that she just wants lots of bunnies running around her farm... well how is that going to happen if they are caged? and if they're not caged, they will just keep mating and mating and mating, ect. This is so not good for this little doe :( this is just horrible animal abuse :(
 
i dont know she would probably put them in cages.
i give up with her.
i told her what i thought about it yesterday and she is not speaking to me.

she does not care what other people think.
 
I guess she will learn then.. so sad that it has to be at the expense of little itty bitty bun buns and their mum. I'm disgusted with her.
