I hope that someone can give me some advice. My piggy, Betty has been poorly and seeing the vet since November. The only thing that they could find ultimately was polycystic ovaries and she had an oophrectomy 28th Jan. She has recovered from the op but still is not eating properly and now weighs only 700gms. She does seem to eat and poo still but I am also syringe feeding her 3x daily and giving her metacam. She has gradually become very quiet not her normal busy self and I'm wondering if it is time to let her go. I've been hoping that she would just go naturally but I think I may have to decide.

Hi and welcome!

I am very sorry that your girl is struggling so badly. It is quite a big surgery.

How much are you feeding her? if she struggles to eat and doesn't take much food, you need to feed more often round the clock. Are you weighing her daily to keep an eye on her food intake? Please have a look at our syringe feeding guide.

Has she got a friend, that could contribute to her behaviour other than that, just keep syringe feeding her & see if you can bring her strength up.
It may be good to checkout that thread out. perhaps she needs the feeding done closer together.
Must be quite a big op for a piggy. Have you spoken to the vet?
I really hope she gets better soon.
 
It took one of my sows about 3 months of syringe feeding post spay to recover, so I wouldn't give up just yet. Please check her Metacam dosage is correct with your vet, splitting it into 2 daily doses can help. Your vet could also add in a small dose of Tramodol, my sow responded very well to that & it can be given in addition to the Metacam. I think you need to increase the syringe feeds to small feeds with about 3-4 hours in between. You also may need to get her teeth checked in case they have overgrown since her op.
 
Thanks I've had a look and will increase the syringe feeding and see if she improves. When she had the op she was 740 and is now 710gm. Could she still stand a chance of recovering? Thanks for your help .
 
I've separated her from her friend as Betty was dominant piggy and there was a lot of squabbling going off. They're in a grid type cage so her friend is right next to her still. I'm giving her .4ml metacam and can give 2x daily if needed. I got them to check her teeth just before as I thought she could have a dental issue. I'm going to try and see vet again to have a talk to her about pain relief. Thanksx

30g is a very small weight loss; it is still well within the daily variance between a full/empty bladder and tummy, so there is nothing to panic about. With a bit more syringe feed and water, you should be able to catch that up within a day or two. We talk about a larger weight loss after an operation of 100-150g, which often takes weeks or months to make up again. Just hang in there; your girl is not done yet!

My Cariad was just 700g, too, when she had her emergency spay at 4 years old, only months after a bladder stone op. She went on to live another year. :tu:

She is getting plenty of pain relief with that metacam dosage. ;)

That's fine, you can split that into 0.2ml twice a day then. If she still looks uncomfortable you can ask about Tramodol.
