Hi all,
Well today out of nowhere Rajah had a very cloudy/blue eye but i knew it was way to quick coming to be a cataract, i found a little bit of hay in his eye so i pulled it out and as my good piggy vet was away today i called the lady i adopted him off straight away and she thankfully let me know it sounded like a grass seed.

I have had a few good looks at his eye today and it appears to have something stuck in it which i cannot get out, i am flushing it with salt water like i was advised, but I'm not sure how often?
ive started and plan on doing it 3 times a day
i was also told that if its bad he may need antibiotics so I'm hoping you guys might be able to help me decide if he needs a vet visit or not, he is very stressed seeing as he has no sight and even me moving his cage items around upset him so i would prefer not to travel with him unless need be.

Seeing as he only has use of one eye already before the grass seed he is now temporarily blind, he is bumping into his pigloo and food bowl the poor darling, he is also much more open to cuddles and slept on my lap for an hour today which isnt quite like him normally.
Anyways here are the pics

P.S these pics were after salt water so his eye may look wet

also i spoke to the vet yesterday about getting Rajahs non existing eye sewn up like the lady from the rescue and i had chatted about and she said unless its causing pain or is an issue she usually doesnt like doing a procedure that carrys bad risks like that, she said it isnt as simple as sewing it up and that she would have to remove all of the remaining bits/tissue left inside the eye socket.
So basically she wants to see him in the next few weeks but i dont think she will do the op, do you still think i should get it sewn up or just leave it?

sorry can't help you there i'm sure someone can tell you. just wanted to say that i hope his other eye improves

It looks like an ulcerated eye; best take him to the vets to get anything still stuck in there and whether the cornea is injured.

If they won't give you eye drops or an eye gel, you can use the ones we sent you. Apply 3-4 times a day and the eye should clear within 2-3 days once the eye is free.

Sending poor Rajah my vibes - suddenly going completely blind is very disconcerting!

Thankyou both

Debbie-i have not heard of those eye drops but i can ask when i call the vet;)

Wiebke-I will call the vets first thing in the morning and see if they can get him in, they usually are pretty good with giving things i need and my vet uses treatments that standard vets(non piggy ones) wouldnt do so she is the good type of vet.
If i get stuck i will use the drops you guys sent, yes i cant imagine the blindness would be nice he has been quite upset today:(

Ouch, poor Rajah!

I've heard about lots of pigs who have hurt their eyes on hay or straw and they heal up with eye drops quite quickly, but if the seed is stuck in the eye it would make healing a lot harder. I think you should ask a vet to remove the seed if you can't do it yourself. Do vets make house calls in Oz? I understand it must be stressful for Rajah to be blind... If he feels comfortable with you, could you maybe get someone to drive you and hold him all the way to the vet?

Paws and fingers crossed. Martha says Rajah looks very handsome, she likes grey men :)

One of my piggies lost an eye, we had it "trimmed and stitched" as recommended by our vet.

Poor Rajah, bless him, I can imagine how unstable he must feel. Even though sight in a guinea is quite poor anyway, it's still going to throw them when something like this happens.

I've no additional advice re poorly eye - flushing and eye drops/ointment is all you can really do without seeing the vet. In terms of his missing eye, I would be inclined to say not to have the cavity stitched unless it is problematic i.e. he scratches at it, hay gets stuck in it etc.

Sending big hugs to you and dear Rajah! xx

Some degree of suturing is necessary, if only to prevent unwanted material, such as hay, getting into the eye socket. However, the sutures should be sufficiently loose so as to allow any fluid to drain from the socket.

Thanks, Rajah burrows alot in the hay, most of the reason he is on fleece is because his missing eye socket can get hay in it so i just have a small pile for him to eat but he still manages to burrowrolleyes,
I rang the vet and emailed some pictures through to her and she advised that it looked just like a grass seed and that i can remove it then keep on salt watering for a few days, she said if it gets worse or i cant get it out then i can come in.
My vets will make housecalls although they dont usually, my actual piggy vet has stopped housecalls as she is 7 months pregnant and needed to reduce her workload;)
Haha Martha has good taste:(|)

Thankyou, it seems alot of people i know think it should be stitched, i may see what the vet says;)

Thanks Laura, he doesnt scratch it but does occasionally get bits of hay in there although i get the out quickly, i have no problem with his eye staying that way but he could get an infection one day thats what worrys me if i happen to miss a bit of hay getting in there

Thankyou,
That does sound like a good way, i will have a chat with the vet and see what she says, thankfully she values the opinions of piggy smart people

really cant help you with eye issues but some very piggy-savvy peeps have already given some advice. Just wanted to give you my sympathy and i hope it clears quickly.

Lots of love to Rajah and you...

So glad my fave boy's ( apart from my own boys of course )feeling a lil better. He'll soon be back to his posing little self. Sending him manly hugs and wheeks from my boys, and some girly kisses from Lulu and Daisy.

My 5 yo black rex Curly has cataracts and still potters about, he has a few bumps if I rearrange their living quarters, but manages perfectly well with limited sight, so if his eye does go the other way I'm sure he'd be fine. I even got a few little popcorns from Curly the other day, though they weren't quite as energetic as some of the younger piggies they still made me smile.

I am glad that you could get the seed out, so Rajah's eye can hopefully heal up quickly!

BIG WHEEKS for Rajah!

Good news, glad Rajah is feeling better!

Almost missed you there Bonnie with your new avatar, that threw me quite a bit. :))

Glad rajah is on the mend! hope he get back to normal and full vision! :)
