I recently transformed my little study into a guinea pig room, having moved them into the house from the cold, cold back garden.

Because my boyfriend had spent so much money on an outdoor hutch for my boys, I thought it would be far more cost efficient to move the hutch inside, but since I've always thought it a little small, I've also built an area around the hutch that they can roam freely in.
The only problem is, I'd like them to be able to move between their hutch and the floor whenever they like, and the hutch is on slilts!

Would this ramp be suitable for them, or will I have to construct something myself? It says it's suitable for guinea pigs, but I am concerned about the risk of them falling off.

Any opinions will be greatly appreciated!

sorry, that link appears to be wrong?

but just a thought ... how about cutting the hutch legs off so it is at floor level?

I know the ramps you mean, how high are the legs on the hutch? The ramp would really need to be enclosed or have something up the sides so that they don't fall off, and not all piggies will use a ramp. I've got lots here, and some do, some don't - even if the food is up or down it!

Most ramps are too slippery, it would need struts across it for grip, or you could cover it in carpet or rubber matting to make it easier for them.

My pigs use a ramp to a hutch i keep in the wendy house. They were able to jump in and out of the hutch but i was worried as the floor was too hard even with vet bed on it.

They were unsure at first but the temptation of getting out was too great. My boy still only goes halfway before jumping tho.

I don't know what floor covering you have but i would make sure you have something underneath in case they fall off (I've not seen this happen but just in case) and try to make it secure to stop them knocking it down for fun.

Hehehe, Netty, are they Pringle's lot? I've never seen pigs jump like that - apparently in their old home they had ramps but chose to jump in and out instead - not ideal!

How about enclosing the ramp with plastic mesh? that way they can see but they will still be safe?

Thanks for the advice, I think I might get plastic mesh to pop over the sides.

I've got fleece on the floor around the hutch, but I don't overly trust it, especially since piggies are so soft boned and all!

I thought about cutting the legs off the hutch, but the boyfriend said no, given how much he spent on it, and there's always the possibility that we'll move them outside again when (or if!) the weather warms up.
