I've had flu since last Monday and now is just a cold, I've been really careful not to breath on them, clean hands etc.
I had a little cuddle of randy, put him back then 5 mins he was making funny noises from his nose, he coughed once maybe twice.

Has he got my flu/cold? I thought they couldn't catch it or it was rare etc, however I'm still careful.

I've wrapped a hot water bottle in a towel and put it in the cage, have put fleece over the ends of the cage just in case of drafts, randy isn't laying near the warm bottle tho lol. Have put 2 drops of olbas on a tissue near the cage and in the Peter gurney book under bronchitis it says that sudafed decongestant liquid can help with resperitary infections (0.4ml daily) now I've just given him some, hope that was right thing to do? He seems to have calmed down now, it's been an hour now.

I didn't know what to do 1st post on here to ask what to do, whilst reading piggy potions or just do all what I've done lol.

I get so worried about my boys 8...

Any further advice? Have I done the right things? Should I get him to the vet 1st thing? Or shall I see how he is tomorrow

Also mum has been decorating at my flat but we always use low odour paint as it makes me ill.

Never had a problem with decorating and having piggies in the past so not sure if that's affected him.

If his breathing sounds wrong, or there is any discharge from the nose etc then its best to get him to the vets when you can as piggies can go down hill very quickly. For now, youve done all you can but see if you can get a vet appointment tomorrow. Make sure he is eating and drinking etc. :)
 
His nose is dry, is eating and drinking, has had loads of hay in the cage and some readi grass, his fave.

I know they go down hill very quickly, had plenty of experience over the years :(
If he is fine in the morning then should I still take him to the vets.?
I have 2 guinea vets I use lol, so it's a case of who can see the piggies the quickest competition lol

Any little thing I think isn't right with my boys then I'm down the vet in a blink, I'm sure they think I'm mad lol:red

I'd take Randy to the vets, as you know they hide their illnesses so well from us. It would be best for him to be checked over as soon as possible.
And NO you're not mad, you a just caring for your piggies :)
 
Given where you live I suggest you book him in urgently (i.e. TOMORROW) to see Simon Maddock at Cat and Rabbit Clinic in Dunston on the basis he has a suspected URI.

Please don;t delay..he needs proper supportive care. Piggie potions is not enough in this situation.

Keep him warm (if necessary bring inside and provide loads of hay)
Weigh him daily
Monitor his food/water intake and poo/urine output
Get a diagnosis and antibiotoic therapy from a cavy savvy vet
Be prepared to also give probiotics, Vit C, gut stimulant and hand/syringe feed cirtical care to keep his guts moving and boost his immune system

If you get him to a cavy savvy vet early enough he has a very good chance of making a complete recovery.

Simon is always my 1st point of call :)
Funnily enough I did my weight checks yesterday, randy is so fidgety and wants to run around and pop corn lol, he's been eating his hay and grass and pellets tonight.
He's 6 months old roughly and weighs 2lbs.
Rocky is 2 in january and weighs 2lbs 6 ounces

Are they good weights?

I know the vets always say how healthy and active my boys are :)
 
I would never keep my piggies outside, plus I live in a flat so couldnt anyway.

I only turn to books for advice when I can't get to a vets immediately or I come on here etc.

I always want to make sure my boys aren't suffering in any way so will do anything until I get to the vets, I've even stayed awake all night so I could syringe feed critical care and water to my poorly boy in june/July/August (rip Rambo 8...:0) and even when I slept I only had 2-3hrs at a time then I was up to do the feed, all this and juggling work and handing over the care to my hubby when I went to work. Sadly I lost him, he had many health problems which the vets say was hereditary and his parents were bred when they shouldn't have been grrrr. I beat myself up for weeks thinking I hadnt done enough. Also rocky was so lonely the night Rambo died I went out the next day to find him another mate.:(

Where would I get pro biotics from? Cos if he gets baytrill he may need some as that's quite harsh on there tummies isn't it? Rambo had baytrill and hated it, I prefer septrim and the piggies like the taste to.
Sorry for the ramble, I'm so not going to sleep tonight. Probably gonna set up camp on the sofa in the lounge so I'm in the same room as my boys :)
 
Most vets would have some kind of probiotic in stock. Even my small local vet did, but he wouldnt give it to me (long story). Hopefully simon will have some. Worst case senario is pets at home sell pro-C.

Great that youve got such an amazing vet so close by! :)
 
I'm sorry you seem to have taken what I posted as a criticism. That wasn;t my intention.

I posted my remarks taking into account the limited info given and the necessity for a quick reply ...being mindful of the fact that there are also other forum members (and general public) besides yourself ,who may read your thread and apply it to their own personal situations.

I dont believe I said you keep your piggies outside (i said "if necessary"...directed at anyone reading the thread)....I also believe i said in this situation that relying on piggiepotions was not enough because this particular situation is more serious.,,(again directed at anyone reading the thread)

I don;t believe either of those situations is a criticism of your care of your piggies and I'm sorry you have read it as that..

I never thought for an instant you didn;t have your piggie's best interests at heart....if I did, then believe me, you would have known about it!

I try to give as much info as poss, yep I'm still up watching them :red

Vet couldn't find anything wrong with randy. His chest sounded fine, nose, eyes and ears fine, weight is fine.

Maybe my quick acting helped, who knows.
Still going to keep an eye on him however and take him back if he changes, he's happily running and popcornng round the cage, squeeking at me, purring when stroked, and nomming all his hay, grass and nuggets, oh and he's so cute how he sucks the water from the bottle :red and still providing me with poop stacks by the bowl, he's so funny how he makes piles/stacks of poop. I'm constantly sweeping them up by the 2 bowls.
