Rapunzel tried to bite me several times today if I would touch her anywhere on her belly. She never did this until a few weeks ago. I took her to the vet and he said he couldn’t feel anything abnormal and said maybe it was just a strong season. I’m still thinking ovarian cysts or something. I made her another vet appointment for Friday. If he still can’t find anything obvious, should I ask for an X-ray or ultrasound or something? She has always been so calm and you could touch her anywhere. The change in behavior has to mean something, doesn’t it?

I am sorry to hear this. I hope you can find out what is going on soon. I'm not an expert but it does sound as if she maybe in pain?

I'd certainly press for more tests if he can't palpate anything obvious. There must be a reason. Hope you and your vet can get to the bottom of it.

Sending you all hugs, hope it’s just a strong season that’s making Rapunzel cranky

When in doubt I tend to start with a quick x-ray.
It's fast and cheap(er!) than an ultrasound, and will immediately rule out a lot of common problems.
Depending on the issue I also like to add a urinalysis at this point, but that might be becasue I have had a couple of bladder issue piggies.

If the x-ray and urinalysis don't show anything then I would opt for an ultrasound - they can show so much and in great detail, but make sure the person doing it knows about piggy anatomy.

I hope you find an answer, but you are right in thinking that a sudden change in behavior does need further investigation.

thanks for all of the helpful tips! My vet is very experienced with guinea pigs, so I accepted his diagnosis of a strong season last time but there is definitely something wrong. I’ll push for more tests, I don’t want her to be in pain and I want my sweet Rapunzel back!

Sending lots of love, hope you can get to bottom of it. I would be asking for a scan, this should be possible conscious or with the tiniest bit of gas

So the vet still can’t find anything wrong with her, he palpated all over her and she never tried to bite him at all of course. He sent me home with metacam in case there is some inflammation or arthritis somewhere causing her problems. He said to try it for a few days and see if she is better and if it works to try just giving it to her on days she has therapy visits, since she is not in so much pain to stop eating or affect anything else in any way, she might not need it every day.

If it were me, I would just go for an ultrasound. It isn't invasive at all and you can have peace of mind. I would just keep wondering, but that is just how my brain works. My Zoey had a UTI. I treated it, but she was still crying right after the medication was done. She was still urinating pink urine. I had an ultrasound done just because of what I went through with my Zelda. She is perfect and just needed a different antibiotic. It was worth every penny to ease my mind. Hoping you can figure it out. She is pretty young still right?

He said if this doesn’t work, he will do an ultrasound. I could tell he didn’t think it was necessary though. Hopefully this works and she will be ok. She will be 3 next month, so yeah she is pretty young

Betsy used to turn into Devil piggy when she was in season. She has mellowed with age but can still be a bit cranky. She was 3 at the end Jan.
