Rare eye condition

I’ve no idea sorry. I don’t think so. Why do you ask? Do you have sows/babies with skin issues?

Guinea pigs can be infected with both the human facial cold sore herpes and human genital herpes- they have in the past been used as lab animals in studies of both these viruses.
However these studies involved scientists deliberately infecting them.
I have not found any mention in the literature of accidental owner-to-guinea pig transmission of herpes. But, I was reading a study today about facial herpes transmission from one human to another via a pet pygmy hedgehog- though this is partly to do with spines and hedgehog spit.
If a female guinea pig did have herpes, she would undoubtedly transmit it to her young via birth and grooming. But, the manner in which she could contract herpes, would be highly unlikely in an everyday situation.
If you have herpes lesions, avoid kissing or sharing food with your pet, and probably wearing gloves while preparing your pet's food, and regularly using hand sanitiser gel, is a good plan.

Should probably add, if a guinea pig has blisters or sores around their mouth, this is probably a bacterial infection chelitis.
See a vet promptly if a guinea pig has any rash or soreness around their mouth or genitals- it is most likely to be bacterial infection requiring prescription antibiotics.

Hi all ,well all the vets at my practice have never seen it before ,A rodentoligist friend said although she had never seen it ,it was introduced in labs to guinea-pigs .I rescued both boys as youngsters approx 3 mths old both had cloudy eyes ,one has cleared up ,but one has suffered with his eyes over the years (they're 3 now ) the reason the vet thought herpes is because he has the spider shape webbing look on scaring on his eye like cats can show .His Eyes have never weeped & it dosen't seem to bother him as he never rubbed at it .It's just the white scarring I have been concerned about .He is seeing an eye specialist on Tuesday ,i'll keep you all that are interested up dated .He has never had sores around his mouth or genitals so they think it may have been spread through a gene . The vets are looking into as much as they can this week it's given them a challenge .He is other wise healthy ,good coat ,good weight & eats well ,i know guinea-pigs hide pain but he greets me each morning by popcorning .Watch this space .....I'm going to try to get some photos that can be shown to other vets .

We have a development after the vets studied all week they have come up with it being Osseous choristorma .Rare but has been found in some guineapigs

Gosh that’s very unusual - is this treatable for your little piggy ? I really hope so ! Any info would be good to inform other members.
You must feel better now you know what it is .
Sending healing hugs to your piggies 🥰

Hi so at last we've got to the bottom of the white spots in my rescue guinea-pigs eye .It is rare but there is info on line & my vet is going to print off any info she can find on it .My boar isn't bothered at all by it ,it doesn't weep or anything .would anyone like to know more about this if so I'll take some pic's & post all the finding info on it .

There is no treatment but just incase of Glaucoma they suggest maybe having an eye pressure test periodically .I will take photos & add info which my vet is going to print off for me . Both him & his brother Tommy Shelby both came with bad eyes when I rescued them 3 yrs ago ,It's only Arthur Shelby that has gone on to develop this condition ,I'm sharing all info with the rescue I volunteer for & a rodent oligist who gives us advise at the rescue . Thankyou for the care you sent .

I haved edited the title of this thread to "rare eye condtion" to avoid misleading future readers as this wasn't actually herpes- hope that's ok.

We've had the odd piggy in at the rescue who have had OC. Luckily it never bothered them but it's a bit of an odd thing isn't it 🤔

It's a really odd condition isn't it? As I mentioned on your previous thread we've had the odd pig come in to the rescue who've either already had it or developed it.
It never bothered them but it would be great to know more about it!

The rescue I help at has had quite a few with osseous metaplasia (which seems a little more common ),although similar ,Arthur shelby eye is'nt all around the eye ball & is not cloudy . I'm so relieved he's not in pain also that I have found a local vet who is finding all she can about Guinea-pigs & rabbits , exotics .

It’s great news 4harmony2 and you must feel better about it. Your vet sounds very good and interested.
So pleased it’s good news 🥰

Hi for people to see what the eye looks like for Osseous Choristoma .It doesn't bother him in anyway ,it doesn't weep ,You just need to keep an eye it dosen't swell if it does then take to vet incase an ulcer or pressure has built up but this sometimes never happen's .

I believe one of my Guineas could possibly have this eye condition too. She has a white mark on her eye which the vets confirmed was actually in her eye. But they were unsure to what it was or why it was there. To me it looks very much like Osseous Choristoma.

Hi Hannah ,feel free to download my pictures & hand them into your vet ,unless your vet specialises in Exotic pets alot don't know about it I was lucky the vet I saw is happy to learn as much as she can about our lovely furries & the eye specialist was on duty to confirm with her .There is another disease called Osseous Metaplasia which is more common & effects the whole eye & often leads to blindness or removing the eye when too bad ,Hope your piggie is okay x
