My female guinea pig, aged 4, has raspy breathing occasionally. It is usually when she is still but if I go to her then she stops and is fine. The other guinea pigs that she lives with are of the same age and are fine. Apart from her raspy breathing she is in perfect health.

They are all indoor guinea pigs and I don't want to have to take her to the vets, especially if it is nothing.

I would greatly appreciate your help and if you have any questions then please ask.

Thanks

IS her breathing clicky at all? To be honest I would be inclined to take her the vet, a forum is good for advice but not a diagnosis. Without seeing her its hard to suggest.

Is it also at certain times like in the hot weather?

I've never heard it be clicky, but it has been going on for over 2 years, it usually happens at night time, sometimes in the day time but only every few weeks or so.

I wonder if it is an allergy. If it has been going on so long then obviously its not life threatening. I ask about allergies because my rabbit Tika is very similar she gets a clear runny nose in the day but by night is fine.

I've never experienced it in pigs though so hopefully those that have can advise better. Good luck! :)

It looks like it could be a allergy to pollen or hay.

I find that a little dab of vicks on the nose helps the breathing.

A humidifier or wet towels draped on the radiators is usually beneficial when the central heating is on. I have/had a few pigs whose breathing has been affected by "dry" air, the symptoms being worse at night when the heating is on most.

Hayfever is possible as well - bed on a material bedding if possible (fleece or Vetbed) and try to ensure as little dust in the hay as possible.

One of my piggies suffers from hayfever and occasionally gets blocked up at other points in the year. Strangely, so far this year she (and I) has been clear of hayfever, despite having suffered badly last year and the year before.

I'd recommend you go to a vet though, apart from to check the piggies out anyway, I've found Bisolvon good, which is a prescription only medicine. It decongests her.
