Hi, not been around for ages but thought I'd share the story of my brave girls with you. Misti and Crackers lived in a large c and c in my dining room. Unfortunately, we had rats get i n (they actually tunnelled in! We live in a very old farmhouse). Anyway we had put down traps and poison but they werent eating it because they were eating the guinea pig nuggets. So one night i removed the nuggets - I wish I hadn't. I was woken up at 3.30am by the girls screaming. I ran downstairs and the rat was trying to kill them!

It had gone for their faces and they were covered in blood. Misti had fought back and came off worst: torn ear, damaged eye and deep wounds all over her head. Crackers had wounds too, full depth so that her skull was visible. So there I was, 3.30 in my pj's nursing and bathing my poor girls. I cleaned them with warm water and put them in their travel bag with lots of hay and put them in the bathroom.

I honestly didnt expect to find them alive next morning, especially Misti, but they were. Both were very shocked though, listless and having small fits. I pulled a sickie at work and thought i would need to have them pts. However, they pulled round during the day and started eating and drinking. The vet gave them antibiotics and painkillers and Misti had drops for her eye. All was going well. I got a large indoor cage and put them in the front room, which they love! The rats were caught and dispatched ( one was especially vicious and my hubby took delight in getting his revenge with a broom handle ).

Then, a week later, what we thought was scabbing on Misti's head, fell away revealing a large patch of skull! The skin had died. Crackers is the same but it hasnt come away yet. The hole is too big to close up and we're hoping that some skin will regrow. Misti's eye looked terrible as she couldn't blink and it was drying out. So it looked like she would need an eye removed and some serious skin rearrangements!

UPDATE
Both girls now doing fine. Misti is completely unaware of her 'hole' and we're continuing with antibiotics and eye drops for a few weeks before deciding what plastic surgery is needed. Her eye seems to be recovering which is unbelievable. The vet is amazed the shock didnt kill them, never mind recovering from their injuries as well as they have. I would do a shocked emoji if I knew how - poor piggies. But aren't they amazing, how they're healing up :)
I hope they continue to get better, they do sound as if they are lucky to be alive. I know people keep rats as pets but I could never bring myself to do it,
When I kept my pigs in the shed I had to reinforce their run/house with metal strips to stop rats chewing through it all and getting in.

Oh my god how absolutely terrifying for you and the piggies, I don't know what I would do in this situation, I'd be in absolute bits! So glad the piggies are ok and are recovering well

Oh my good lord. Your poor girls. What amazingly strong characters they must be to have survived an attack like that. It's such a horrific attack. I knew rats could be vicious and they can get seemingly where water couldn't but that is so awful to have happened in your own home.

Omg that is just horrific. I am amazed they have recovered so well! Poor things and what tough little guineas. I think I would have been in bits! They are a credit to your care and love.

Flippin' heck! That is utterly horrendous! Your poor piggies and poor you. I am so pleased they have survived and hope they are proud of their war wounds! I would have been beside myself! How did you manage to get the rat off them?

Oh my gosh.... those pics are really shocking! They are tougher than they look, aren't they? Fingers crossed for a full recovery!

Gosh your poor piggies.hope both recover well.just shows what damage rats can do.i am flabberghasted.such a caring owner.x

Holy crap how frightening! They're doing amazing, well done you! I hope the rats can't get back in, little vermin s***s! I work for a waste company and we have waste tipped here, food, mixed stuff, all sorts so as you imagine we get rats a plenty. Just an fyi- they will get through brick and concrete if they desire! Horrid things!

Good god this has actually given me chills. I'm sitting at work with my hand over my mouth. Your poor poor girls, and poor you! What an awful shock!
So pleased to hear that they are making a good recovery, what little fighters!

Oh thats absolutely awful! What brave strong little soldiers you have. I'm glad they both survived and are getting through it all. x

Glad they are recovering well, I'm surprised she didn't lose her eye. The 2nd picture is amazing, not surprised the vet was surprised. Tough little cookies.

This is truly horrific! I'm so glad both you're piggies are recovering! I'm amazed that they survived, to be honest! As far as I'm aware we don't have rats but now I'm worried that mine will encounter a similar thing!

Glad they're healing well and wishing them a swift recovery!

goodness me... what a horrible experience for you.. glad to hear they are healing xx

Oh my goodness poor piggies I'm so glad they're on the mend we had a rat 3 years ago in our old rented house it managed to get through the vents in our house and came into the house under the bath I swear it bit my chihuahua who died shortly after but I obviously can't prove it, they are though vicious things and terrify me, I love pet rats but wild ones, no thanks, hope your piggies make a speedy recovery.

Oh your poor piggies, such a shock for them & you. I would have just cried. Who would have thought they would have been threatened indoors.
Did they have to have injections because of the filthy diseases rats carry. I hope they continue to improve.
Love to you all x

No injections but they are still on sulfatrim which has kept any nasties at bay. Misti's head is still nice and clean and dry and closing up ever so slowly. Hef eye is also looking good. Crackers still has a big scab but I'm sure that will come off when it's ready.

what amazing little piggies. And I chuffin well hate rats, even more so now. So glad your piggies are recovering well.

Wow, coming along nicely.
Hoping their memory's will be wiped out, with there dedicated & loving owners. Love coming your way. xx
