Literally.

I've just been told this morning that a rat was seen in the building that I live in. Now it was seen on the ground floor and I'm on the first floor and the boys were fine yesterday when I left, but now I'm nervous about going home, just in case. Plus...argh, rats.

As long as your flat is secure it wont be getting in buddy. Don't worry about Rats they will give you a wide berth, enjoy going home, you have been through so much.

Environment Health have been out and the landlord is filling up a couple of holes in the wall as a matter of urgency but I'm nervous about one getting in via the sewage system, since all the flats are connected that way.

I wouldn’t think it would. You could always keep your toilet seat down just incase. But I wouldn’t think they would get in that way.

I'm sure they are more scared of you than you are of them buuuut wild rats freak me out, I love pet rats but when I see wild ones it's a scream fest lol. Don't hate me @Squeakz :(

I don’t hate you @Kylie80 and wild ones can be a real nightmare to discourage once they get into a building.
I once worked based out of a remote location way put in the countryside. We were not allowed vending machines in the building, and any food had to be brought in by yourself and all trash and leftovers had to be taken home to be disposed of.

There were rats outside of course and the management didn’t want to risk encouraging them inside. Some of them were HUGE and not afraid of people at all. If you dared eat your lunch sat on the carport wall in summer it would not be long before you’d have some cat sized furry company inching along the wall towards you looking for a treat!

Do they get the size of a cat *shudders*

My sister has pet rats and thinks they are wonderful. She keeps trying to persuade me to get some but 3 piggies is enough and I love my guinea pigs.
I agree about the wild ones though. We have them down by the River Kennet and one day I was amused to watch a rat stalk one of the cygnets until daddy swan came along and chased it off. I've never seen a rat move so fast and I was scared of that swan!
