Hi all,
My four year old boy Cracker developed noisy breathing last week- I took him to the vet on Friday who diagnosed a lower respiratory tract infection.

Apparently his right lung is noisy but he has no other symptoms; he's eating and drinking fine and is his usual self. Sometimes-like now- I cannot hear his breathing, other times it sounds terrible, particularly at night. He's been prescribed 0.25ml of Baytril once a day which sounds too low to me (he's 1.1kg) and I'm to take him back to the vet on Wednesday. When Cracker had Baytril for a UTI last year it took over a week for it to take effect and I'm unsure as to how quickly I should expect him to improve.

I wondered if he had developed an allergy of some sort but I haven't changed anything- I'm still using the same variety of bedding and hay.

Any advice?

Poor Cracker - it's so unfair when they become poorly :(
Can't really offer you much advice here but think the Baytril needs at least 2-4 days to 'kick in' One of my piggies was on it for a mild URI and I couldn't see any improvement after a few days then all of a sudden, he picked up :))
Can you call your vet for a chat as they may just advise you to continue for the 7 day course ?
Hope little man feels much better soon :)p

When my little boy Artie developed a chest infection at eight weeks old (alongside an eye infection) he was on baytril for two weeks and it took three weeks for him to get back on his feet. I was told to switch from woodshavings as this made his chest infection worse and would prolong his illness hes now kept on vetbed.

I'd suggest for a speedy recovery plenty of warmth, keep him inside if you can and provide plenty of snuggley places with lots of fleece! We provided Artie with porriage oates as these were his favourite treat, plenty of fresh veggies with vit. C and I made sure he was kept in a quiet area.

Dont know if that helped at all :)

Hi sorry to hear you got a poorly piglet :(

I cant offer any help I'm afraid, but I think what the members have already posted is very helpful.

Hope he gets better soon

The main things, as others have already said, are warmth, plenty of vit C and TLC :)

If you're using an antibiotic, I'd strongly recommend giving a probiotic an hour or two after each antibiotic dose, if you aren't already. In my experience, it just helps them feel not quite so rubbish due to the antibiotic, which keeps them on top of eating and such.

At the end of the day, you know your piggy and you are seeing his symptoms. If you aren't happy, are doubting the dose, thinks he needs something else, speak to your vet :)

Hope he gets better soon!
