Hi, ever since weve had piggies (nearly 2 years now) two of our greedy ones get an intermittent rattly throat on occasion. It is not related to breathing They are perfectly healthy in every way with 100% normal behavior and it resolves itself in a day or two. and I came to the conclusion they have just got a remnant of food still in their mouth which they haven't swallowed yet. ( one of them, our boy, has the filthiest mouth you have ever seen/ smelled always full of droppings (vet has checked and said it's just him). Does anyone else have this?

Hi!

Sometimes greedy pigs can get a partial obstruction from eating too fast, which is normal, but i'd be a little concerned about the mouth constantly being dirty. I'd maybe have his teeth checked as well as his mouth/ tongue for oral thrush or some other mouth issue. His mouth shouldnt be full of stuff all the time, he should be able to clear it when hes drinking etc.

All the best

Thanks for that Adelle, he has been checked at vets 2 months ago and all ok. It's not so much full per se, rather his teeth are always dirty, but vet said his teeth are fine . My 17 year old daughter sites him up on her knee and wipes them with a tissue!

The teeth can get pretty food filled, but its usually at the back where we cant see. My vet has syringe some water in the mouth and get in there with a cotton bud to be able to see my piggies back teeth! As long as it isnt all at the front and visible when looking at his mouth. If it is, id maybe have him checked again by the vet. X

Update : As I was going away for a couple of days and leaving piggies with my daughter who didn't drive I decided to check out the 2 piggies who do this Rattle. Vet checked them both, chests clear, all fine. Apparently it is to do with piggies who eat too fast and generate some mucus at top of larynx when they cough, which can stick to vocal chords and crackle as they open until it resolves itself. Related also to the shape of the individual piggies throat. Tendency to eat fast often with piggies who have been neglected (both of these where abandoned and adopted from a rescue) So alls well : -)
