my 5.5 year old sow crunchie had a hay poke injury, causing an eye ulcer. I removed the hay from her eye immediately and she saw the vets within 2 hours, however she had developed an ulcer already which was near the surface and not very deep.

She was put on isathal 2x day and lubrithal, which was needed every couple of hours for the first while.

The eye ulcer didnt start healing until 3 weeks into treatment, and she had two treatments of where the vet scratched the ulcer surface gently to encourage blood flow and therefore healing- then by a week later it had healed completely (checked by a vet with the dye).

It has been gone and her eye has been fine for a couple of weeks, this morning her eye is cloudy again in the exact same area as the previous injury.

She has the vet at 2.30pm.

Does anyone have any experience of an ulcer which reocurred after healing? What is the success rate of getting it to heal again with the same treatment?

We where worried about her losing or permanantly damaging her eye last time, i was so relieved when it healed and her eye was normal again..

Its never ending with my two oldies!

I'm sure everything will be fine Adelle, I've often wondered about the hay being to sharp for them but I don't know what to use to replace it. Fingers crossed for Crunchie.

Is not something I have heard happening before but your girls do like to test you. Could it be a cataract developing?

Poor you! With a lowered immune system, it is much more easy to develop complications. My then 7 year old Nerys had a poke/scratch last December, which promptly came up over the one night we were NOT at home, so the ulcer had already started to penetrate further into the eye. Thankfully, she reacted well to isathal and a lubricant, so we didn't need to start on steroids to get on top of the infection that was sitting deeper. However, the ulcer started coming back on Christmas Eve, so I had to rush back to the vets for more medication over the holiday period.

Fingers very firmly crossed for Crunchie!

Nothing to add other than best wishes, oh and any chance of a picture of Crunchie's beautiful face?! She's such a pretty one, as is her sister of course

She has a cataract in the other eye, this one is the exact same area as last time and is a general cloudiness.. I'm not sure

All the best at the vets! They should be able to checked whether they are dealing with an ulcer or a cataract.

My favourite colouring and breed!

Sadly, the little ginger aby mum on back-to-back pregnancy watch that had been reserved for me in rescue at the beginning of this year died from a sudden heart attack. I'd been very much looking forward to her! :(

Thats a shame, sorry to hear that! Crunchie is the only abby ive ever had.. Shes certainly something else! Full of attitude, extremely dominant (even now shes spayed) and a nightmare with other pigs.. Her and fudge have a lovely bond but trying to introduce her to anything over 8 weeks old is a no go.. She even dominated my first boar.

Crunchie has a little scar tissue in the eye from the old ulcer, its currently a little inflammed hence the change in the eye. The vet is confident a 5 day course of isathal will sort it out!

I have no advice just wanted to say I sympathise! It's just one thing after another just now, hope they're both doing okay

Thank you! I reckon our girls have some sort of pact against us ! Hope beans and toast are doing well x

Welcome to my current problems with the Tribe. I have got about 6 older sows (all breeds) that need to dominate, come hell and high water... :(

All the best! Nerys' recurring ulcer went down in two days, much to my relief.

I'm going through it at the moment, my new arrival was off to the vet yesterday morning with a hay poke, years of keeping piggies and this is my first one, she's now on a course of painkiller meds and antibiotic eye drops.

This was my first too.. And seems to still be an issue with her! Hope your little one heals up nicely

The eye is starting to clear after just 4 drops, I think the ulcer was caught fast enough, she was fine when I locked the shed at 10pm and spotted the cloudy eye at 7am when I fed them. She was in front of the vet at 7.45 getting examined. ;)
