I love to take photos, and I don't do too bad a job, but with the camera I have it is a big production to take guinea pig photos. There have been some absolutely lovely pics of the little guys here, and I would like to have one I could just point and shoot and get a sweet little guinea pig face like you all have been so kind to show me of yours. So please tell me the names and models of the cameras you use? I am actively shopping, and even though I can buy what I want, I don't have the money to buy the wrong thing.

I have a Canon Ixus which is very good but actually all the photos on here have been taken on my phone! I have a Nokia N8 which has a really good camera and it does give me great pigtures of the squeakies!

Does this mean we get more photos of Red?! I do have a big soft spot for him! xx

The best pics i have of the girls are when my daughter takes them with her Canon.........they're so crisp and clear x)
Which Canon, doll? Maybe go to http://shop.usa.canon.com and pick out the picture of the one that is like it and tell me which it is? I would have looked at the Nikon CoolPix this weekend but it was one of the ones that wouldn't work.

I use my phones camera most of the time... I have a Droid. BUT I also have a FUJIFILM FINEPIX S1500

I ran out of time to edit but I thought I would add... All the 'photo shoots' were taken with my fujifilm but all the random ones are off my phone.

Mine is a Nikon Coolpix S560.
Nowadays I edit them better with my iPhoto.

Thanks for all the replies so far; keep 'them coming as today I'm packing up birthday presents to send to friends and family; if we weren't born in August we were born in September, so I know what our parents were doing around Thanksgiving (end of November) or Christmas (end of December). . . . after I get that done I'll be able to check out the camera models on-line. If you use a phone camera, I'd like the info on that, too, please.

iPod touch 4! Hehe! Maybe people can post some pics of their guineas that they took with their camreas:)?

Well, I do; I have an Olympus SP500UZ, and I got it because it has macro focus capability of as close as 3/4 inch. I can get a photo of the fingerprints on a coin, for example. Now, that is excellent, and would be for guinea pigs, EXCEPT that the piggies just won't stay still! So I would like some way, cell phone or camera or whatever, to get those good up-close guinea-pig-face shots, the lovely ones that show their coats, and ones that show in crisp focus where they live and what they are doing. But right now it's the faces that intrigue me most.

I have a Nikon D90 - possibly a little overkill for guinea pig pictures. It's the running joke in the house that I started to keep tropical fish and now guinea pigs simply because I ran out of things to photograph :)p

TBH though, I don't take snaps and expect them to come out perfect, regardless of what camera I use. I take loads of everything and only keep the ones that come out well and even then will tweak and crop in aperture or photoshop.

There's lots of good articles online that will help you improve composition skills and how different camera modes work to get the best out of whatever camera you have. You don't have to spend huge amounts to get good photos (unless you want to of course :)) )

This was from my Iphone 3G :)

Aww that's so sweet, Rachael - just goes to show that camera phones can be just as good (and often better as more portable and spontaneous!)

Note that I haven't attached any of the hundreds of blurry, out of focus, fleeing guinea pig bottoms that I've also taken :))

Whilst I think the only way to get a good picture of your piggy is to just get trigger happy with your camera, I would however, recommend a Nikon as the best brand. I did a degree in Photogrpahy and have used Nikons my whole life - no other camera compares to their quality.

You can start major flame wars with Canon aficionados with that statement, hayley :))

Though I switched from Canon to Nikon for DSLR as it's got excellent performance in low light (I loathe using flash as I mainly take animal and people photos and flash can stress out the animal/child plus nasty reflections on fish tanks!) and I have to say it's far superior to my old Canon.

That said though, the point and shoot Nikons don't appear to be as good quality as the Canon point and shoots - Canon seems to regularly beat Nikon in consumer tests - particularly the Ixus and Powershot lines.

The best way to pick a new camera is to go and see one in the store. You can always ask the store to price match with online prices and a great camera on paper might feel horrible in your hands or have a horribly unusable menu system. So find one that suits you individually.

Another tip is that glass is more important than pixel count. Higher pixel count doesn't mean better picture quality - it just means a larger picture size. Often it can actually reduce picture quality as they're cramming more pixels onto a small sensor as most consumers think higher numbers are better. It's the quality of lens that is the key. Good brand name (preferably a company that makes its own glass) is a safe bet.

I have a Sony one, can't remember the model number but any Sony is very good, can't really go wrong with them. It's a 10 megapixel one that's about 2-3 years old now, was meant to be £120, got it for £95 but you can now get a 12 mega pixel one for about £100 (don't know what this is in dollars maybe $70-$80) and normally any kind of nikon is good too x

We have two cameras - a Nikon D60 SLR and a Nikon S8000.

Both are fantastic cameras, we got the little S8000 as the D60 can be a little bulky and to be honest, we don't really know how to use it properly ")

I love them both though and would highly recommend Nikon too :)

Many of the photos I post are from my iPhone too though..

Oh how I can relate to THAT! I go out and take pictures of what's in the grass, for example; this property I bought is a 4-leaf clover farm, it seems, and I take photos of the really good ones. I'll include one at the end of this post.

You are absolutely right! Having been a newspaper photographer here at the local Army post and one of the community newspapers, those articles helped immensely in getting my shots on the covers. I used an older model of my own camera (the Olympus SP500UZ as I mentioned) and one of the digital SLRs, I don't remember which model. The problem right now, though, is point-and-shoot ease of use so that I don't miss the guinea pig faces (and butts running away!) The one I have now has lots of settings that are great for still photos, and I have sold jewelry on eBay using that macro function to get closeups of the diamonds and whatnot, but for fast guineapig motion at closeup range, it is difficult to ever get a good shot, so I need a little handheld something or another to keep beside the guineapig cage. You are right about spending the money, too. That's why I'm asking, so I don't spend a lot when a little will do. If I can get a free used one, so much the better, but I have to know what to ask for. People often can't sell them when all the new ones come out, so they will give them away.

Oh, that was so precious and EXACTLY the thing I am talking about!

That also is important to me. I try not to use flash if I don't have to, and the Olympus I have is marvelous in that respect. Last week AFTER DARK I took some photos for a friend of his new motor home for insurance purposes, and without the flash and under the street light they came out better than in a sunlight venue! Not using a flash also decreases demonic red guineapig eyes. . . . I went to the store to try out the cameras I might want, and the displays of the models I was interested in did not work, so here I am.

Many of the photos I post are from my iPhone too though..
It appears as though maybe upgrading my phone is the way to go; my cell 'phone is ancient, comparatively speaking, the Nokia base model from 2009. It works for what I need, and I bought several for about 5 dollars apiece, so when I leave one out in the rain or drop it into the dishwater I can just transfer the SIM card.

And thanks thanks thanks ever so much for the photo examples; they show me exactly what I want to see and do!

Here's that photo of the four-leaf clover I promised; it's one of the reasons I got my camera, for the closeup ability WITHOUT flash.

I have a kodak c183 and thats great - little, neat, excllent clear pics ands automatically focuses to get a clear picture and lots of settings but i find its all auto on mine. I have pics in a thread on here so you would see yourself.

I shamefully have about 7 cameras haha.

But the one I use for the piggies is my Olympus FE5035 - it has a setting on there especially for animals and pets!

Other than that I use my Canon 400D :)

If you can stick to Fuji, Nikon, Canon or Olympus for a new camera - just through my studies trying to be a photographer these are the best.

Canon tops the list, but they're all great companies.

I got some good pics with my camera phone, but a few months back I bought a FishEye 2! I missed the not knowing what the pictures were like until I got the film back! And fish eye makes all the pictures fun! only down side is I have to scan the pics in if I want to upload them, and having to learn how to use film again! lol
