I was offered 2 brothers guinea pigs and am still making mind up :-\ but one of them has a weakness since birth and has had fungus and mites a couple of times and was also told he would be prone to them due to his weakness. Now it will be my first time getting guinea pigs and i was wondering would ye take these type of gps on your first time? taking into account that although i want the best for my future gps i am a noivce 98)
I am also getting an african pygmy hedgehog and wonder if any of ye have one as well?
Fungal can be a very tricky thing to conquer. To be honest I wouldn't recommend it if you haven't dealt with it before - it's something I'm not entirely comfortable with managing and I've had piggies since I was almost 12.
I'm curious who would actually let you taken on special needs piggies if you're a new piggy owner?
Basically i am involved in pet resuce and the person in question is also involved and knows i have done my homework re gps have been researching it for a number of months and reading as many books as i can lay my hands on and she would be on hand to guide me. She is very responsible and only rehomes rescued gps to people she trusts and she homechecks first
forgot to add she treatded them for fungal and mites and kept them until they were healthy again but did warn that the weak ne could be prone and need vitamins and suppemetns to maintain his health and she is very strict on the type of home they get to maintian their health
If you're aware you might be taking on a hefty workload, have the support of a piggy knowledgeable person and can cope with potential (big) vet bills then you've got a big heart and maybe just go for it?
Unless the piggy has problems eating you shouldn't really have to supplement them with anything... veggie vitamins are the best!
If you were a beginner all on your own I'd say no don't get them. If you can be sure you'll always have help from someone, then why not? You need to be sure you can spot things quickly and easily and get them treated quickly
O0thanks folks ye brought up a couple of things i hadnt actually thought of. Will probably wait a while until healthy gps come along since they will be my first. I want to do the best for them whan i eventually get them. Anyways the hedgie will keep me busy
