Reaction to suture material

Hi. My Guinea Pig died 3 weeks ago, that was 2 weeks after a bladder stone removal operation. We could not believe he had gone through the aneasthetic and the operation only, it seems, to have had a reaction to the suture material.

My vet thinks this is the reason why he did not get over it and ultimately the op was all for nothing. This has been so heartbreaking for us as he was only 3 yrs.

My question is, has anyone else out there had a similar problem.

I had a similar problem after a C section a few months ago - fortunately the piggy made a full recovery but it was touch and go.

3 days after the op she pulled the external stitches out and the wound opened. She was restitched internally after wound edges were trimmed. Glue was use to seal the wound externally so she couldn't pull them again. A few days later she developed abscesses around each internal stitch, these were drained as reopening her was too much for her antibiotic was injected into abscess area and oral ABs given for 10 days. Her body rejected the stitches - bit by bit they came to the surface where I could trim and remove them. I haven't had a pig react this way before and I would think it is quite unusual and very difficult to predict.

My heart goes out to you - to lose a pig after he'd been through so much is just so sad.

So sorry to hear you lost your piggie after all that Very ad.

We had one of your chinchillas reaction badly to he stitches, when he was neutered

He still hates us, as he had to go to the vet several times and needed baytrill daily which he hated ! His recovery was very slow, but he did make it eventually

That's odd? I thought that the suturing thread was just nylon? I'm not sure about the ones that dissolve, though... so sorry you lost your piggy

So sorry for your loss. Your right nylon is used often as non dissolving sutures, but its a bit extreme to have a reaction that bad that you lost your piggie? I dont understand. sorry. Vets these days tend to put dissolvable stitches under the skin in, they tend to cause less reaction.

I know, that's what I thought? We use nylon for suturing (people) patients up at work...I have never ever seen a reaction :-( I think this is just very unlucky...

Poor thing! I haven't heard of allergy to sutures specifically, but I do know that guinea pigs and rabbits are prone to abscesses generally because their pus is very thick and hard for the body to clear away. I know abscess formation is a risk after any surgery for them. ((HUGS))- I'm sorry you lost your pig. It seems so unfair when they are young... we lost one of ours at 18months last year due to dental issues and it was so upsetting that something that began as such a seemingly minor problem was ultimately enough to end her life far too soon.
